He was the last surviving member of The Band. May they all rest in peace.

They’re all together now. Give this one a listen. Beautiful performance by The Band from The Last Waltz, prominently featuring Garth Hudson’s saxophone.

It’s kind of wild how this was one of the most famous and influential bands of their era for decades after, enough to get all the accolades immediately, but fizzled out to relative irrelevance that their deaths aren’t really reacted to at all
Seems to be roots rock just fell out of style that no one who is younger can get into it

You’re right, but I figured /mu/ might be a place where people would really know their stuff. Especially since people here seem to spend so much time complaining about current music. My hope is that somebody will now find out about The Band and will come to appreciate how great they were.

Garth was pure soul. His sax solos on the studio version of It Makes No Difference are sublime. My favorite though is his organ solo on Bessie Smith

Might just be too obscure for now. But this song has left too much of a legacy for zoomers to ignore them forever. They'll find them eventually. RIP Garth

Come to think of it, part of the reason young people haven't heard them much is because there hasn't really been a 60s revival recently. Last time that was cool was when Austin Powers was in theatres. Hippie culture hasn't really been introduced to them yet.

RIP Garth. A legend among legends.

I believe The Band’s music is timeless. It will sound just as good 100 years from now as it did in the late 60s. Such beautiful, soulful art can never die.

Whew, these fellows can really play. They cook on "Smoke Signal," and you should hear the guitar solo on "Last of the Blacksmiths." Seem overly worried about the passing of the world as they know it, though--not just blacksmiths, but eagles, rivers, trains, the works. B-

RIP. He had a great and original style. His live saxophone solo on "It Makes No Difference" is among my favorites

None of the individual members were really celebrities. Robbie wrote a book that did well but I don't know that he was famous.

this is him on Camper Van Beethoven's Key Lime Pie.

he is credited with "pump organ" for the whole album, but not sure where else specifically he played. great album in any event.

I’m pretty sure Robbie Robertson didn’t even get one. Jannies/mods likely have no idea who Garth Hudson is sadly.

Nah, boomers are fucked. Zoomers and every generation since revile them for fucking up the world as we know it. It's gonna be a very long time until they and their culture are looked upon favorably again.

Big Pink, S/T, and NL-SC are the only albums that really grab me. I love these albums and think The Band are top tier but their other material doesn't seem to grab me as much. I've tried Stagefright as that's the classic contrarian's choice Band album... It just doesn't really click for me. Feels too "diluted" for lack of a better word (and i usually like albums produced by Todd R like the sparks debut). What am i missing here? Do i just need to spam it more?

I always reckoned that Cahoots was the one with the strongest material outside of the big 3, but that hasn't clicked yet either save for a few tracks. Are any of their other albums better than these 2 and more deserving of my time?

Also the basement tapes are kino and Garth was tied with Rick Manuel as my favorite member. RIP to the wizard. Sad he died in a nursing home. Imagine your shitty kids put you in a nursing home and your neighbor is the literal musical hand of God. Crazy notion.
