Judas_Priest-Jugulator
>Jugulator is the 13th studio album by British heavy metal band Judas Priest, released on SPV Records October 16, 1997. It was the band's first album of new studio material in seven years and the first without frontman Rob Halford, who had left the group in 1992, as new frontman "Ripper" Owens took over. The album's reception in the metal community was divisive; some thought the material would be good if Halford had sung it, others thought it was a dud in any case. Guitarist Glenn Tipton defended Jugulator by arguing that Priest hadn't released any new material in more than half a decade and had gotten a little out of it since. "You have to understand that our last was in 1990. We're a good two albums behind where we should be and the result is not as big of a change as some think it is." Tipton would later admit that the album was lacking in good melodies but the band was "not feeling very melodic at the time."

>Owens has felt unhappy that the band disavowed Jugulator and its follow-up Demolition after Halford's return to the group in 2004 and none of its songs have been performed live since, although Halford has expressed no personal objection to performing them.

>Jugulator attracted little attention in the Anglosphere but made the top ten on Germany and Japan's charts. Original copies of the album are hard to obtain as Germany-based SPV went bankrupt not long afterwards and no reissues or reprints were done.

Jugulator is pretty alright but Demolition is hot garbage.

I remember a Usenet post from '97 reviewing this album and expressing bewilderment at the lyrics that were horrible and cheesy even for metal standards. Guy was like "wtf man. did Glenn's 13 yo son write this stuff?" Also it was just Bullet Train and Cathedral Spires+filler.

yeah the songs sucked. Owens was too in awe of Tipton and Downing to offer any of his own songwriting ideas even though he was younger and probably had a fresher approach to doing things.

Imo its better than anything with Halford post-reunion
But Demolition sucked ass though

He was chosen precisely because he was in awe of them and wouldn't challenge them. Tipton saw how Maiden let Blaze Bailey contribute way too much to the band and that drove them to the lowest they've been so far in terms of numbers.

lol that's funny considering the Ripper albums then drove Priest to their lowest ever numbers

Halford was writing great lyrics on the two Fight albums and they were more age appropriate for a guy in his 40s than these two geezers trying to write lyrics a 16 year old would be embarrassed by.

To be fair Glenn has never been a genius songwriter. Ever since the early days of Priest his songs were always the cheesiest cliches about rocking out and being a badass. He's gifted at the fretboard but he's not exactly high on intellect.

Japanese absolutely love Judas Priest although I think it's because they love their cover arts.

Fucking horrible, Tipton and KK trying to ape Panetra was embarassing. Then they followed it up with a fucking borderline nu-metal album.

Not a dig on Ripper though, he's great when he's given good material. That Winter's Bane album is killer.

Many such cases. Van Halen with Cherone, Genesis with Ray Wilson. The old members just want a yes man who won’t push back on their ideas.

in fairness, that's inevitably going to be the case when a new member comes into the band, unless they're already an established star of similar stature (and those are very hard to come by)

That's what Rob did with Fight, although he was way better at it.

Kinda funny how they disavow jugulator and won’t list it on any of their streaming pages, yet they keep demolition on there, as if it’s so much better…

Priest depends on Halford more than Maiden on Dickinson desu.

I mean they also disavow Rocka Rolla outside one track, so...

But rocka rolla is on their streaming profiles. Jugulator, for example, isn’t even on Apple Music.

Distribution issues? Jugulator came out on a literallywho and no longer extant German label so who knows who even has the rights to it now.
