This is not true. The public details of the split between Sykes and Whitesnake are nebulous to this day, all we know is that Sykes was fired and he wasn't happy about it, and that Adrian Vandenberg wasn't officially hired when he recorded the Here I Go Again and that he had no idea the relationship with John had soured. Steve wasn't hired until years after Sykes' departure -- Steve Vai was hired because Vivian Campbell refused to do the writing and recording he had promised, took a lot of money, and then went AWOL, something he was notorious for doing (You should hear Dio talk about Vivian).

Sykes would've become the bigger star in that lineup than Coverdale. And Coverdale would've not liked it. Also I assume Sykes was holding on to his writing credits when Coverdale would've wanted to give him less than he deserved. All the while when Sykes /made/ that album. 1987 is so special because of Sykes' intense guitar playing. Its Sykes' guitar that sets that album aside.

Campbell getting booted was down to a combination of his wife not getting along with Tawny Kitaen and that he was pissed off that Coverdale wasn't interested in writing with him after hearing a few of his song ideas. There's an interview with Vandenberg where he said Campbell presented him and Coverdale with some rough demos he'd done for the 1987 follow up and "they sounded like fucking U2".

One of the greatest to ever do it. Every song he played on the guitar is just perfect. Technique, tone, I don't think anyone could play 80s rock guitar style as well as he did.

He was a big inspiration to my father and I, as players. My dad plays black les paul customs exclusively cause of the guy and his work on the 87 album and on blue murder made my dad wanna improve forever back in the days.

RIP to an absolute legend, what Coverdale did to the guy is a fucking shame.

What I like about Sykes is his massive vibrato coupled with pinched harmonics. He seldom used a (guitar with a) whammy bar, only a couple of times in the studio as an effect. His fretting hand was so strong that he made that whammyless Les Paul scream and wail like Van Halen's Floyd Rosed superstrat.

That's basically what my dad and I always talked about! He always had those pinch harmonics down so well! Always clean, loud, and hitting the note perfectly. And his vibrato control was just unreal, I learned how to properly control vibrato just watching his live performances and copying the motion.

Such a great guitarist, it makes me so sad people on /mu/ don't know more about him. Yeah he was in "glam metal" but some of the stuff off of "Blue Murder" and "Nothing But Trouble" just tears your face off and is so interesting sonically.
