Fuck it looks ugly in hi-res. A probably nice painting ruined by this pixelated photoshop-flames smeared all over it. Maybe that was the intention considering its literally a depiction of hell, and I'll give credit it is still a striking memorable cover. It just sucks in comparison to their others like picrel

Music in general as a collective interest / cultural thing? ... short answer: yes. Highschool's a bit more of a petri dish when it comes to the memetics and forced popularity of things, but there's always counterculture, which are, themselves cultures. If these spread beyond the walls, they usually leach into the surrounding scenes.
It wasn't a dominant scene, but we had some metalheads in my highschool - some really into spreading some hard to find stuff. We didn't really have any shredders until I was in gr11, but the spirit of competition spread that a bit wider.

This conversation about how people are supposed to seem really portrays how destroyed our culture has become due to generational marketing and mass media over-messaging. If we expand our general conception of what constitutes psychological warfare we can see advertising and organized top-down media distribution in general as an example of it. Metal record labels are a 20th century relic that basically operates on the same principle of a group of businessmen deciding what is to be promoted. Now this is done automatically through algorithmic boosting and deboosting, including things like shadow banning and delisting. All of this is self-serving bullshit that impedes the flourishing of creativity.
