art tatum has such an incredible technique but its not exactly listenable or varied, its like some sort of yngvei malmsteen style shredder, peterson is capable of playing slow or fast, all diff styles, all with incredible listenability, whos the closest to tatum in terms of technique but goes beyond him musically

Anonymous 01/22/25(Wed)13:59:27 No.125232025
>>125231731
In my mind, it works this way. Free jazz is pure improvisation, explosion, something like you're in the middle of a thunderstorm and have no idea what to expect next.

Avant-Garde has some sort of structure, like a storm where you know when and where the thunder will hit. Still has some elements like atonality or different techniques. Just because it sounds like a hot mess at first, I give them a second listen and usually find a rhythm.

For avant try Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature by George Russell.

For free try Solo Concert by Leroy Jenkins. Improvisation at its finest but at the first listen it made me grind my teeth.
