Public broadcasting and funding for the arts

Is there a real reason why rich people force the public to pay to create the content only they are interested in with tax? Is it just a turbo flex?
And yes I have seen yes, minister, and the sentiment is the same as for the opera as it is for public radio.
Historically speaking, how do they get away with this in western countries?

>only they are interested in
I'm interested in a lot of public broadcasting stuff, and I'm not rich.

I don't have an answer, but most of NPR's budget is from rich-people grants and huge tax writeoff foundations, not direct public funds, which is pretty minimal. PBS has more funding from the government, but I like PBS (and I don't like NPR). They air things like this:

People used to regularly listen to the radio and public broadcasting on TV before there was 24/7 news media, zoom zoom. It wasn’t always an echo chamber for rich liberals

I think we should fund more public radio and television because corporations are chickenshit about funding quality.

I wish PBS had more radio stations. NPR has them all over the place but I get sick of hearing about the 80th gay crippled trans black woman who wrote a book/play about menopause and free love in her late 40s. They did have a nice spot on a new organ album though, Dreamcatcher by James McVinnie, that was pleasant to listen to, and I learned about Elie Metchnikoff too a few weeks back. Anyways more good programming, less of the political veil.

Yeah that stuff is so. fucking. boring. It's a bunch of middle-class liberal comfort food. I'm blue-haired woke so I'm fine listening to a story about gay crippled trans black women, but give me the one who didn't write a book and is working at a Dollar General somewhere and is keeping it real and "coming up... next... on N P R." But it's probably because they're getting most of their money from the Ford Foundation or whatever that they're talking about the book/play about menopause rather than poverty and other shit.

Hopefully Trump pulls the plug on NPR/PBS, Americans shouldn't be forced to pay for propaganda.
