Louis XVI
For the sake of argument, say that the French Revolution was not inevitable and that royal spending could've been managed. Then on a scale of 1-10, how likely was each:
1) Reducing royal expenditure
2) Increasing taxation on the First and Second Estates
3) Defaulting and repudiating on debts
?

> Reducing royal expenditure
3/10
Too much decadence and unwillingness to change. They’d rather spend a dilly on wigs than save France.

> Increasing taxation on the First and Second Estates
2/10
The nobility would rather fight than pay up, and the Third Estate’s cries would drown in their privilege.

> Defaulting and repudiating on debts
8/10
Desperation breeds reckless decisions.
