What would the Byzantine Empire be like if it survived to the 21st century?

Presumably it would be an interracial breeding camp retaining Turkish culture in Greece

There's no timeline where it can survive to the 21st century, everyone in the region wanted to destroy it.

More that long distance PODs have nothing to do with history and are generally just masturbatory.
>What if the ERE survived to the 21st century
It would probably be as irrelevant as modern Greece since that's about all it held after the 12th century and there's no reason to think it would become a superpower over France, Spain, or England.

If you want to debate alternate history it should be about short-term implications
>What if America lost the revolution?
France, Spain, and the rest of Europe would continue ganging up on England until they took a fat L because England was becoming global hegemon outside of Europe after the 7 Years War.
>What if Alexander the Great didn't die young?
Odds are he would have waged smaller campaigns in Italy and maybe the Arabian coasts, his empire would have probably still disintegrated not long after his death as Greeks and Macedonians would rebel to fight Persianization or Persians would rebel against a small foreign kingdom ruling over them like they did against the Seleucids

It would probably be a massive shithole, the sick man of Europe.

Would be interesting if it joined the eastern bloc though, what would the aesthetics of socialist Byzantium be?

And in both cases, the claims are correct and the "neighbours" deserve only death.

The ERE was the pinnacle of culture, arts and engineering in Europe for the vast majority of its history. Just because the Ottomans were a garbage raider country that occupied the same region doesn't mean it would have been the same.

What did Byzantine "culture" even have beyond court coups, blinding every other person and arguing over irrelevent points of dogma every few years?

> 21st century Constantinople
> blend of ancient architecture and modern tech
> massive domes and churches mixed with skyscrapers
> people walking around in togas and joggers
> everyone drinking coffee and arguing about philosophy like it’s 500 AD
> a dude wearing a tech company hoodie with a laurel wreath on his head
> he's a “digital emperor”
> spends days sipping coffee at forums, feasting on baklava, and debating philosophy
> they have online forums like they're still debating the Council of Nicaea
> abd they still have an obsession with relics
> but now they’re selling NFT versions of them
> the Hagia Sophia is a tech hub
> they call it “Hagia Soft”
> Byzantine cuisine has gone gourmet
> gourmet moussaka food trucks everywhere
> Instagram influencers posing in front of mosaics
> “Why wear jeans when you can wear a chiton?”
> the skyline lights up for Byzantine New Year with fireworks shaped like eagles
> history classes still teaching Justinian and eveyone's son named after him
> everyone is super nationalistic but in a classy way

It depends on so many factors, like when did it make its recovery? During the Komnenids? The Palaiologoi? How much territory do they even control? Enough to be an empire or are they just a rump state?

There's a chance the Great Schism is mended and a Catholic Byzantium exists. Alternatively they stay Orthodox and have to face enormous pressure from their neighbors. But without the Turkish threat on the Reformation Christianity may be a lot more divided, since there's less reason to unite and more to infight, so they may survive by playing sides during Western religious war.

One thing that's for certain is the Balkans stay Christian. It's quite likely they fall to Catholic pressure from Hungary, Poland, Venice, so Romanians, Albanians and all the South Slavs will follow the Pope, or they become Protestants or follow some other heresy like Bogomilism.

I assume colonialism will progress as usual so Byzantium will be even weaker than the Turks historically, who at least had the Persian/Indian Ocean trade to fall back on.

This might make them fall into Russia's sphere of influence as they expand and seek to secure their trade routes into the Mediterranean.

Anyway, those are some pointers, but there's so many things to consider it's hard to properly theorize.

Just modern Greece but with even more obnoxious feeling of self-importance and main character syndrome.

It would be most likely poor shithole, as all the reasons for the Middle East and Southern Europe's relative decline would still trigger. So their thousands of years of history would be their only source of pride and pretense to be noticed.
