Found this stat the other day. Brutal.
https://fredblog.stlouisfed.org/2025/01/the-unusual-shape-of-the-beveridge-curve
>Since 2015, the fraction of workers poached from other firms to fill vacancies has risen significantly and has been as high as 80% of advertised job openings.
The number of jobs being filled by people who already had jobs accounts for 80% of all job openings. Including ALL advertised jobs, meaning it includes those that never hired anyone, were purely on paper to facilitate outsourcing, etc. The unemployed mass only gets hired into <20% of the openings...

This is only weird if you live under the weird delusion that being more aged means you have automatically more authority, that you cannot receive orders from someone less aged from you. People have this weird programming about authority and hierarchy deeply ingrained within them.
Everyone has a different career, different ambitions, different needs, and different aptitudes. A system entirely based on hierarchy enforced on some stupid metrics like your age is simply stupid.
You can be a young adult and be pretty fucking competent at what you do. And you can also be an old fart that is so incompetent that it's even a wonder you're still working.

Because that's how it used to be. Experience pretty much decided how competent a person was at their role in anything for 99.9% of (pre)history. Only in the past few generations have we begun to generate new information so rapidly it's common to fall behind. I think there's a human instinct to regard the old as capable and wise and the young as incompetent and foolish. It's a cultural trope that extends back as far as recorded history goes but I think there's something actually hard-wired there.

>I think there's something actually hard-wired there
The only possible thing I could accept is that this viewpoint is only gotten from our childhood, where your parents, then your school environment, acts as a way to teach you values and what's right and wrong. At that stage of your life you pretty much have no authority on your own and authority figures are automatically decades older than you.
It doesn't make it any more logical to pursue this value system when it comes to work though.
By the time you leave education (traditional or certs based) you are more or less at everyone's level in terms of knowledge. The only things that possibly separates you further from colleagues are two things: aptitude, and experience. That's where the loyalty and authority-via-age comes from. But that does not work especially in fields like IT where the new stuff comes out rapidly and you need to keep up. Thus the only thing now that separates us is raw competence and aptitude for new things. That's also noting the fact that people are willing to change careers and don't hesitate to get the fuck away from unfulfilling career choices much more early.
All in all this is a good thing. Why should I listen to old fucks just because they're old? Why would anyone listen to me in the future if the only thing I have to show as authority is the fact I'm going to die of old age much sooner than them? Fuck that kind of logic, especially in IT.

Kind of funny how zoomers expect this probably due to there baby boomer or genx parents who got into the fields before everything went to shit.

I think you're right, I was just making an observation about history. Even the school and family environments you mention come from pre-contemporary traditions, devised in a time when middle-aged people knew pretty much all practical knowledge they'd ever need and it was difficult to ever "fall behind".
I think what you describe is a cultural change that's been happening over the 20th and 21st centuries, the historically typical rebelliousness of the young vs. the old has gained a new weapon in that younger people not only have physical, but educational and even technological advantages over the old now. Yet the social system hasn't caught up and geriatrics still hold all the money, property, and power.
>Why would anyone listen to me in the future if the only thing I have to show as authority is the fact I'm going to die of old age much sooner than them?
And if you look at this in reverse, it's a dire portent for the future. From the old generation's point of view: why should I care about the younger generation's future if I'm going to die of old age before it comes to pass? The traditional answer was "for your children", or some sort of social contract where the young defer to the old and wait their turn... look how many families are childless or parentless now, and how the social contract is ripped apart. The elderly still control all the institutions but have no reason to wield them for future generations' benefit. Then they wonder why young people have no faith in institutions.

You claim I am wrong, yet you appeal to "this is how things should be" without explaining why.
You have constructed a mental hierarchical model based on authority provided to you according to which generation you live in. Zoomers to you have less competence than people from previous generations. Why is that?
You claim that loyalty to a company is the ultimate value there is when it comes to work. That's not how the world works. There are multiple studies proving that loyalty to a single workplace *invariably* means you will earn less. If that's how the market operates, why the fuck should I uphold that as absolute value? The market is okay with trashing you out over competence and other metrics, so why do you insist on keeping that old model alive in your head?

It should be this way because that is how aging works. You grow more knowledgeable as you age. Elders etc. You get better. Not everyone is like that but that is how it used to be where a company or business would take younger people pare them with older more experienced people to teach them how things work. There is a reason why 18yr olds are not teaching math or whatever the fuck at MIT. It's also much more then raw knowledge its teaching people social soft skills as well.

"Jobless" is science-fantasy of course, but you don't need to eliminate all jobs. You don't even need to eliminate any jobs. You just need to use technology to make existing labor more efficient. This depresses hiring and labor participation will drop all by itself. You don't need to use the word "will" or "might" here, since this is currently happening.
Technology confers comparative advantage on those who wield it, so I'm not sure what their theory there is. I can understand cases like e.g. it's probably cheaper to hire two guys to fix your roof than to develop roof-fixing robots... but I'm sure people said the same thing about automobiles and cotton gins in the past, too. Eventually technology catches up. Unless you envision a future where technological progress peaks and ceases meaningful progress. Or labor becomes absurdly cheap, but considering world population is leveling off I don't see that happening.

Yeah, I get it. But then you have both the young and the old looking at their own society and deciding they don't really give a shit what happens. How does such a society continue itself? I guess you're right, just try and make your life as much like a cruise ship as possible, enjoy hedonism as much as you can because that's all there is. I knew young people were thinking this way but it didn't occur to me even their parents and grandparents might have the same vision of the future. (that is to say, nothing)

In my view, the only thing you reliably get with old age is more time to reflect on your life and who you are as a person. You've had more time thinking about how you want life to be and plan around your needs, and people who are in your life that matter to you. Doing so makes you a more confident person overall. That is a valuable skill in a workplace and thus makes you more wise. Those soft skills are pretty important especially for positions you mention, like a math teacher at MIT.
But it doesn't make you any more competent hard skills wise. There's a vicious diminishing returns effect with hard skills in IT. You'll always manage to be behind, and the one you'll be behind from will somehow be a 18 year old from south korea or some shit. You cannot fight that sort of thing, and that's why we have a change of values on our hands.

I don't really care about money myself, but this is how a lot of people new to tech actually base their decision. I do a lot of recruiting, and a lot of recently graduated students will not hide the fact they're in tech for the money. They tend to leave pretty quickly. The world around us has changed and it's time to accept it.

That’s the problem. I think both sides see that the situation is bleak and it’s worse for the zoomer because he has longer to live. That’s why they turn to vaping and drugs, and the boomer drinks and gorges on “great food” on yet another vacation.
Maybe we’re just bored as a species? If we had more planets colonize perhaps that would serve to organize the best of us into being the best versions of ourselves. Even the British would stop being cucked if new opportunities to colonize appeared on the horizon.

I think you aren't seeing the viewpoint the new generation has. Everything IS all about money, actually. Because time is money. If you don't rack up a lot of money fast enough you won't be able to buy a home and have a family before you're too old. And the means of doing that puts you in debt and eats almost your entire young-adult life. It's a race against time, and young people are losing. The average age of a first-time home buyer in the United States is 38. There simply isn't time to kick back and enjoy your "work-life balance" or your wonderful boss when you're racing against real estate prices.
Unless of course, you give up, and accept you won't have the life your parents' generation did. And when everyone starts doing that at once, you get the "crisis of competence", AKA nobody dedicating attention or effort to their work because their career doesn't really have a long-term purpose anymore and nobody seems to care how anything turns out.

My pet theory is that it's a decline in quality of life, probably ultimately stemming from fucked up wealth distribution. If people had faith that their lives would be better than their parents', then they might try and make sure their children's lives are better than theirs. (and actually have children for that matter)
Millennials had/have worse lives than their parents so the next generation expects theirs will be worse too, so why bother? It goes from a positive, constructive cycle to a vicious cycle of nihilism and hedonism.
I always think it's a wealth distribution problem because, well, money = quality of life and a tiny handful of people have most of the money, seems like a no-brainer.

You're pretty close to how I view it too. Really until you've talked to a lot of young people graduating in tech fields, you cannot realize how many of them think life is a race to rack up money. They see this enormous mountain to overcome to hope to have a good life.
Where I disagree is that jobs have to be a competence race if it isn't about the money. It's about giving sense to people in their life. If you have employees who don't program in your company because they seriously like the product and they're invested in it on a value basis, you'll end up with demotivated people or turnover will increase.
Nowadays a good manager isn't one that displays authority and wields their age as means to assert dominance over their colleagues, like OP pic implies. A good manager is someone that can give a clear vision to everyone, and get everyone on the same page from a value standpoint. Their only authority is a value-based one, not a competence one. That's why a lot of employees are vastly superior in terms of competence than their managers, but are not managers. If you are willing to give up the old way of thinking of hierarchy within a business, you will be happier in the workplace, and you won't have this sense you're battling against the machine. That's how I feel.

I think that makes sense. The authority approach used to work, because there was an implicit belief that following orders would result in prosperity and success, i.e. if you just "did your job" you'd have a successful career and at least afford most of the things a flourishing 20th century adult wanted. Now that's simply not enough and the younger generation knows it. You can "do your job" for years and still be stuck living with your parents. Employees have to actually be convinced the juice is worth the squeeze. The OP pic portrays workers as "at the beck and call of others", but are they really? What for? There's no good reason to live that way. It won't buy you a house any faster. The rewards authority once offered no longer exist, so the implicit faith in authority is gone, and with it goes concepts like "company loyalty". I guess the upside is, yes, everyone has to actually buy in on values instead of blindingly following the leader. Then again, I wonder if that's a less efficient way to run a company.

the only good reason to operate within a system where leader = orders, is if the work itself requires quick response, or if lives could be lost if you don't act quickly. Think the military. Any other job, especially in tech, needs other types of leaderships to function.
It doesn't prevent people from acting like OP's pic, where your managers will bark orders at you and expect you to follow, especially in shitty jobs, because they know you don't have any options. In tech you have options, so they have to keep you with other values, and the employee has more power within the business as an entity, even if it's literally their first day. That's why I started this whole thread saying the world we live in is infinitely better, if you drop antiquated concepts of power and authority. The only people who don't agree are people who are scared or who have a really shitty employer, and the world is full of those people.

Yep. It's funny how people are in denial here and outside. They think more certs, more education, more xxx... will solve everything lol. Here is the truth: only nepotism gets you a good place in society and you don't need to lift a finger nor be competent, while the plebians are fighting among themselves to be the best slave for their owners.
It's not grim, it's a fucking nightmare where the rich is getting richer and more powerful by the minute, while the poor - despite being 1000x productive than his predecessor - can't barely feed himself because there are a hundred of slaves (local and imported) competing with his position. All of this was manufactured by the people in power, to make people like you and me never able to climb the social ladder. Future generations will be raised like cattle and their collar will be UBI. Enjoy your future.

No. It's actually so much worse than you think it is.
