I got laid off a few months ago from my job and I still have a pretty nice work laptop that I never sent back. We closed out everything so it's too late for them to reach out on getting it back, but I'm worried it could ping them if I turn it on. What do? Is it safe to wipe the laptop and keep it for personal use? It's SSD - can I just wipe the drive and install a new OS rather than replacing it?

Go for it just pray it doesn't have some kind of MDM, with that they can still control it even if you reformat

Might have some kind of GPS shit inside, taking it apart and replacing the wireless card would probably be the best course of action

They laid me off so absolutely fuck them. I'm not giving them shit if I don't need to. They never asked for this laptop back, but they did ask for my most recent one, which I returned ages ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had a bluetooth pinger, a little coincell battery can keep those cocksuckers alive for months, years even. Hope you aren't within range of a party van. If you can't find it after disassembly and still aren't sure if it's bugged or not you're honestly better off just selling this thing but then it will be on your conscience when that thing pings every few hours or so to avoid detection.

Most midsized and large companies don't actually own laptops, they lease them. If they didn't ask for it back that probably means the leaser didn't ask for it back from them when the contract expired. I would just use it as is for a while then reformat, at least that way if someone contacts you asking to get it back you can say in good faith you thought you were allowed to keep it

Consumer ones obviously don't (I hope) but no sane company would let work laptops roam bug-free because when a leak/uppity worker rampage does happen and they can't geo-locate that son of a bitch they have little to no legal recourse. Any dumbfuck like OP can use a VPN but it doesn't matter if it pings out certain bluetooth signals to party vans. You know, like your fingerprints. It's that hard to hide them under keyboard keys or the whole touchpad.

Anyways you should wait for couple of months before trying to sell it because you wouldn't want to get a criminal charge from such a useless thing.

Glad someone in this thread actually has a job. They are just going to throw these old laptops in the trash or sell them in India for $5. Anything that doesn't come back is a nice tax writeoff and one less thing they have to pay to get rid of. If they actually wanted it back, they would've asked for it back. Nobody is going to take the time to actually track you down for it. Nobody is looking for it. Congrats on the free laptop.

Apart from whatever garbage corporate software was installed on it, I seriously doubt it has any ability to phone home. Especially if it's just some Dell or HP shitbox that they bought a whole truckload of. Totally wipe the SSD, then install your own OS and use it for whatever you want.

Thinkpads have a system built into the bios to phone home in case of theft, so its totally possible.

Looks like these fucking faggots put a BIOS password on it. What do? Is there any way to reset the password? I can't boot from USB to wipe/reinstall Windows because of these fucking queers. Should I just destroy this thing Office Space style for funzies?
Anonymous 01/22/25(Wed)21:28:41 No.104002433
>>103995964
Well ideally you would access the bios, and change anything that might be related to tracking or that allows remote management, if the bios is password protected then it's going to be pretty hard, on older models it wasn't too complicated, you could short some pins, buy a new chip, reflash easily, newer models however are pretty solid in terms of security, if they haven't bricked until now then I guess they don't give a fuck

All he has to do is go into the bios and see if computrace is turned on or not. Odds are it isn't.

If the IT isn't retarded they will know when you turn it on
I got my company laptop stolen years ago (left it attached with an anti-theft lock but that didn't stopped them lol), and in the IT ticket I saw there was a date+time of last time it was on along with the IP connected to it along with a bunch of other serial numbers of it
It was a Dell Latitude i think

Not really, the salvage value for something like a laptop after it's fully depreciated is $1 at most

If it's got computrace, they'll know when you connect it to the Internet, not when it's simply powered on. Computrace doesn't even work if you install Linux. Computrace is a bios level rootkit that drops files and installs the trace service in Windows only, and will keep reinstalling itself even if you reformat. But, creating a series of dummy files (and registry entries?) can keep it from phoning home successfully even in Windows.

I read a bit about this a while back, this info may be outdated, but it's what I remember. The info is out there on how to defeat it.

I had a company that did this. It was bound to their workspace with some weird Dell shit, there was probably a way to break it but I never looked. They sent me a shipping label in the mail a year and a half after I left. No box. I threw it in an azon box and took it to FedEx. Guy seemed concerned that there was no padding, told him not my problem got the tracking number and left.
