10 years ago, I would have been excited for the idea of an e-paper watch with a useful SDK but that shit never happened and now watches as a whole are a dead product category, they're not even fashionable anymore when your phone has the time and all your notifications.
There's a reason all smartwatches now try to sell you on health tracking BS, nobody would buy them otherwise.

I use my smartwatch to track my running and workouts. It lasts 2 days with all spyware and sensors on.
On "watch only" mode it lasts for 28 days.
To be honest I don't really care about it's battery. Every day I put it to charge when I shower and that's enough.

In the last few years, to placate manlets, the trend has gone to 36mm and 38mm becoming a standard offering. If I were to list them by size it would be;
XS - 36mm
S - 38mm
M - 40mm
L - 42mm
XL - 44mm
XXL 46mm

I have a normal wrist size of 7.25" and I max out at 44mm with 38mm looking small and 40mm looking perfect with no lug overhang even on something like an intramatic. Average male wrists are 6.5"-7.5". Now if you're talking about how popular divers are I agree with you, I'm sick of the fat fuck looking watches being popular.

Most gold plated watches will still have a steel caseback. You would want to go for one with a brass/bronze case and then you would still have to look for one without a steel caseback. Even one with a sapphire/mineral glass caseback will usually have a stainless steel bezel. Brass should just be copper and zinc, bronze copper and tin.

Imagine if you had a technology that would track people 24/7 and was attached to their body at all times (they'd be encouraged to do this even when they wouldn't normally wear a watch by making up some BS 'fitness goal streaks')

You could even make them even more invasive than what we subject prisoners to (as those have rights they are aware of), since for the criminal, we only know where they are right now, but for these people?

We could monitor their heart rate during the time they're reading an article to know their secret thoughts and feelings they don't even dare articulate in private. We could detect hidden health conditions and sell the data to health insure to make sure they can drop the problematic customers.

We could even psyop them into buying the new one every year, and using it as a status symbol?

But people surely wouldn't be that stupid, would they?

I felt like this, so I built my own watch. It's not perfect, because nobody makes some of the parts I want, like a ceramic bezel insert with full minute markings in the size that fits my bezel, but it's about as close as I'm going to get without a full custom build, and it's about 90% of the way there, while the closest real watch I could get would be about 70% at best in terms of looks, and maybe 50% in terms of materials and weight.

Why? Because e-ink was new and whiz-bang? Good contrast for daytime visibility, unreadable in the dark. And monochrome... text messages I guess? Do you really need to read a text on your wrist? Thats why it was never made, that'd be a stupid watch.

The only good smartwatch came out well before e-ink, it used a dot matrix display and had a battery life of about 2 years, which wasn't great. There was nothing wrong with LCD in the first place, the power drain is the CPU, which only manages 2 years in the simplified time only mode. If you switch it to the real time mode so you can play tetris on the shitter, it lasts about 2 months.

One of them I actually only liked for the bezel, the rest of the watch wasn't that great. This is the only mass produced watch I'd like to actually own and wear. Even then, it's not like it's a perfect watch. Those bezels aren't great (both in terms of clicks and the shitty aluminium inserts), I prefer a different day display, and those old Seiko bracelets are cheap junk.

But still, if I had to wear a fully genuine watch, I'd buy this. Luckily, I live in the modern day, where I built a watch with better parts throughout (aside from being automatic, which is a downgrade) for less than it'd cost for a mediocre example of this watch today.

The thing with beauty is that it's pretty subjective. Just because lots of faggots think the moonwatch is the coolest thing ever, that doesn't mean I'll think it even looks wearable.

I did look and I don't like them. Why is that so hard to believe? Maybe I just don't like "quintessential designs"? I'm into the idea of wearing a time thing around my wrist, I'm just picky as to what I (don't) want it to look like. Pic related is an example of the *precise* thing that I like in that category, while many of the very similar designs are a hard pass for me for one reason or another. In other categories I again have very specific but different things that I like and dislike.

I like thinner watches, but my watch isn't thin. Nobody makes the kind of cases I'd want for that anymore, and the custom market is built around auto movements, which are thicker to begin with. My current watch is 11.7mm thick, which required some custom modification to both the bezel and the caseback, as stock I think this watch case is about 13.5mm, so I took almost 2mm off it, but it's still a far cry from the 9mm of those old quartz models.

As for the parts, I got pretty much everything off aliexpress aside from the bracelet, which is an uncle seiko Z199 (also heavily modded), and the sapphire, which was cheaper locally. Movements are easy to find if you're sticking to companies like Seiko who don't jew their customers by only selling replacement movements to "authorised repair centers", but they will tend to be bulky. Dial quality can vary, and it's one of the few areas where OEM stuff really tends to be a lot better than what you can build, but the style of dial I wanted is unpopular to begin with so I couldn't even find an OEM dial I'd like to start with, especially with a day/date window.

If you're into simpler cases without bezels and dials without windows, you might be able to get some closer to what you want, and if you don't like bracelets then straps tend to be far easier to deal with. I can't live without a good steel bracelet personally.

I have been compiling lists of watches to reccomend people based on their price category but I don't even think about extremely plain dress watches. The dress watches I would get are ones that have a pre-1950s look and usually with a moonphase. Otherwise you have the modern dress watches with the crazy textured dials. But the plain style exists in a middle ground without either the fun insouciant look of the modern ones or the grandpa likes features of a moonphase.

You can get a sw200 for like $200 that would be thinner than an nh35. 4.6mm vs 5.3mm. But you're probably looking at the eta 7001 2.5mm and angry at swatch. If you're already into machine work what you could do is buy a small cnc router and mill whatever case design you want. Just pirate solid works. Sounds like you already do a lot of dremel work. Yeah I despise bracelets and take them off immediately and use rubber and leather quick release straps and swap them constantly. I do like a milanese on the right watch.

My seiko from 1981 is tiny and thin and a lot of the parts appear stamped which is how the flat bodies of the whole cheap vintage trend like the prx look.

Yeah, but my NH36 offers day as well as date, which is a must for me. And it was only 30 bucks, so I can buy half a dozen replacements of it when the lube starts running dry. Ultimately, it'd only be a saving of a little over half a mm, for a nice thickness level you really have to go quartz.

>what you could do is buy a small cnc router and mill whatever case design you want
While I could do this, it'd be a significant expense for something with enough accuracy, and all my case work was simple hand stuff, it's not hard to make something already flat thinner with some abrasives and then polish them.

A small one would be fucking sick to just machine watch cases out of blocks of 316. But then you would need a tap for the caseback which are fucking tiny threads. You have to respect how good the chinese have gotten at machining in terms of quality at the speed they have done so. 10 meters depth = 1 bar of pressure. Add 1 for air pressure if it's absolute and not gauge. Recreational divers are restricted to 200 feet depth = about 8 bar absolute. The deepest dive ever without a hardsuit was 530 meters = 54 bar absolute.

How do you know when you've gotten 10 meters or 1 bar down in the ocean? Who the fuck knows but I assume divers do because its a matter of life or death.

Those european ass clowns made up some nonsense like a "metre" and a "BAR" and because its base 10 everyone thinks its good shit. Whereas if we came up with 100 feet = 1 heavywater, they'd be furious with us.

Yes, the nh34, nh35, nh38, vk68, etc. Avoid the miyota 8215 because it doesn't even have hacking. An example of the chink version being better would be laco. Laco makes a flieger for $400 that uses the miyota 8215 while the tandorio that is $55 uses the nh35. Laco also has an eta movement option for ~$1000 which is made by swatch group. Eta and sellita are the top swiss watch movement manufacturers and they're in most high end watches unless the movement is built in house like omega or rolex. Omega is owned by swatch but their chronograph movements are in house. But swatch brands like hamilton are just etas with a different name. The vast majority of watch makers are like automobile carriage makers where they do bodywork but the engine and chassis underneath are bought in. Miyota is owned by citizen and their movements are the second most common cheap automatic movemenrs to seiko but they're worse at the pricepoint. Seiko 5 series used to be the recommended starter watch abouf 10 years ago but they're a horrible value for money now. Their glass is a mineral glass+ and their dials and cases are all cheap and shitty looking. The best value watches under $500 are all chink watches now.

Best feature is, you click a button and it sets the time for whatever location you're in. Landed in a foreign country? Np just hit a button and you have the local time precise to a millisecond. That's just the coolest feature a watch could possibly have.

I used to post my musings that only Pebble got smartwatches right, but apparently that's not what people thought and the company is kill for 8 years now. Too bad. I would like my Time Steel to get better, namely get bigger screen and a crown for scrolling messages. At least mine is still alive, Gadgetbridge still works, Rebble still works for people who prefer original app.
I tried Tizen, Android smartwatches and it just ain't right when I feel like I need to care for my watch. Pebble always knew its place, that it's a tertiary device (after your computer and phone), and it should just werk. I'm disappointed that this wasn't appreciated by enough normal people to keep the company alive.

You know, it's those little things that one could say were limitations, were the strength of these watches. No OLED? Transreflective display is excellent in sunlight, and the full panel backlight (with meh contrast, mind you) activated on shake of wrist turned out to be an essential feature for a quick light at night. I used the flashlight feature on Pixel Watch and it was funny that something that Pebble did with a wrist flick needed 2 hands to click to on Pixel. I also liked that the backlight turns off after a few seconds so if it enables itself unprompted, I don't need to think about it because it's just for a few hours. I did like that on Pixel I only needed to place my palm on the screen to go back home = turn flashlight off, but you know, still something to remember to do. Yes, tiny, but you get the idea.
On the other hand crown was pretty handy on Pixel, really wish that Pebble had that. I'm not educated in hardware dev so I don't see myself doing a DIY Pebble software compatible project that would bring to reality what Time 2 could have been. But damn, if there was such project, I would fucking commit to building it for myself, given good documentation etc.
I really like that seemingly forgotten concept of watches design to be smart first (C SDK available), but also to know when to stay dumb.
