Why not combine xmpp and mumble? They'd do better together.

I have 2(two)questions: a) Mumble has to be self-hosted right? what are some instances I can use if I just want to vc with some friends straight away? I don't have time to self-host a server. b) Kind of related but what's some non-propietary software that supports screen sharing? Please respond, I'd like to ditch shitcord asap.

I didn't follow the drama regarding it, so I am asking here. Did the SimpleX devs implement a feature to counteract their own E2EE? I like the idea of SimpleX, read the whitepaper, was even contemplating writing a C++/GTK3 chat client for it, out of dislike for the electron app one, but it I kind of lost interest for a while and now I want to look into it again?

Last I remember, the brave jitsi instance (brave talk i think) doesn't require signup. The main jitsi server asks the host of the call to login with an account.

Matrix supports screen-sharing but it's kinda mid; I believe it is controlled opposition to Discord.

I agree, but what would an actual alternative look like? Why hasn't an actual foss alt showed up at this point. Everyone complains about Matrix so it's strange that there's no traction on something decent.

A single modern client for XMPP+Mumble, no reason to reinvent the wheel.
>Why hasn't an actual foss alt showed up at this point. Everyone complains about Matrix so it's strange that there's no traction on something decent.
Because controlled opposition works, the people who complain are a vocal minority.

open source doesnt scale when you put too many features into a single app you have to have different apps for different functions
