Copyright is an impediment to the advancement of entertainment, academia and industry.
We are all collectively and individually poorer for the enforcement of global copyright, regardless of whether we produce our own works or not. It is almost always areas that function as lawless wastelands for IP that see the greatest productivity and development, which is why the GPL is the only good copyright license, seeing as it strips the obfuscation from compiled programs and prevents a regression back into copyright.
>Without copyright you'll just be exploited by a major company
It's really quite the opposite, since it is the disproportionate size of these corporations that allows them to force creators to the bargaining table at a disadvantage and bargain away the rights to their own ideas, and that's when they are not actively using the vagaries of IP law to force their hand with the blackmail of drawn out legal cases. Even if they can not force you to agree to sell away your ideas, they can still undermine you in other ways or even take a slap on the wrist for violating your copyright, so it's quite a moot point.
The DMCA has simply extended copyright into a type of bullshit patent and trade secret since circumventing DRM for any purpose has been deemed a legal grey area at best.

Copyright laws are the reason why the US is falling behind while China is quickly catching up.
You can't really improve anything because if you do, some patent troll will come after you.

And yet even the art of modifying software or creating software to interact with other software has become a bizarre legal grey area at times due to copyright and the byzantine measures employed by legislation like the DMCA.
The truth is that IP law as a whole is shit, with even trademark being rife with corruption and abuse.
