I wish my Framework had, like, 50% more graphics hutzpah for the same or less thermal profile. That'd make it the only computer I'd need.

Had my Zenbook for coming up 8 years now (UX331UN). I paid ÂŁ900 for it and it's been a great laptop. I wanted something ultraportable with great battery life and some GPU power for some light gaming and it ticked all of those boxes. But these days the Nvidia MX150 GPU can't play much of anything beyond indie titles and the 8gb of soldered RAM is a bottleneck for basically everything.
Thinking of trying to pick up a 4th Gen Thinkpad T14 AMD since the Ryzen models are supposed to be good and the 780m Radeon graphics will be a 2x performance leap from the MX150.

Shouldn't the integrated graphics on intel chips be getting way better along with their dedicated GPU dev? Or are they going to try and create market demand by artificially capping the IGP?

13". If the 16" was out when I was looking for a laptop, I would've bought one instead, but this isn't a bad laptop.

It's not that bad but I don't know what to tell you without a specific example (which I don't have on-hand.)

Anyone with a 16" framework want to chime in? I really like their goal and want to support them but not if I'm going to regret it as my daily.

I got the 16. I can't compare it to the 13, but I am very happy about it. The fact that I was able to center the keyboard, and choose to move it over to install a numpad at a later date, was a big plus. The physical mic and cam switches are also cool. Assembly and disassembly was absurdly easy. My biggest complaint is that the touchpad doesn't line up perfectly with the left and right spacers, so there's a small edge sticking out. I've seen one person on the forums complain about thermal issues, so they had to reapply the thermal paste. But since it's built to be taken apart, at least a problem like that isn't as bad as on some other laptops.
Hopefully they're improving with each batch, and the build quality is better now than for the one I got.
One thing to be wary about, that isn't immediately obvious, is that not all expansion cards (USB-C, audio jack, etc.) can be used in all available slots according to the diagram I got. So there's a small chance you won't be able to have your ideal configuration.
But overall I'm happy with it.

The battery is going to get swollen eventually! That's called a "spicy pillow". And to make things worse, your laptop will get hot and throttled.
Think twice before you buy that objectively shitty laptop!

Meanwhile, the Dell Precision laptops are objectively really amazing, including the old ones from 2011-2018.

I got a bit of extra ram with that in mind, but I’ve not tried local LLMs yet. I’m skeptical that it would be better than just using Claude, but it wouldn’t hurt to play around with it a bit I suppose.
The main draw was honestly the display. I’m using the thing to work and study all day so little things like that make a big difference. Hopefully the better memory bandwidth and ssd speeds help with compilation times a bit. The air wouldn’t handle multiple displays before but I did switch to one big monitor recently and it seems to handle that fine. Doesn’t handle an external display + sidecar iPad very well tho.
Mostly it’s just cuz work and school have been going well, and when you’re making good money you can have a QoL upgrade as a little treat to keep you on the good path.

the mac app store has an app called Draw Things that is really easy to learn to run local diffusors with and you can download models and loras from civit.ai to use with it.
I like the local LLMs just for toying around with and building the skill to use them and not rely on webapps for access to it.

Check out Exo https://github.com/exo-explore/exo
you can cluster your m2 air, your m4 max, and your future m5 and combine the ram to run a model bigger than you otherwise could on a single machine.
tb5 cables get expensive though...

The M18X-R2 is the best laptop ever made
>18.4" screen
>3x HDD slots
>4x RAM slots
>socketed CPU
>2x MXM slots
>solid aluminum case
>solid aluminum hinge system (won't break with use like every other laptop in the world)
>12 pounds (filters weaklings)
you can use the MXM slots to put modern graphics cards in it, at least up to
RTX3060 last I checked. And you can use a NVME to MXM adapter for PCI speed SSD. Obviously you can also slot in new, top of the line wifi cards too. Invest in a platform, not a system. 12 years strong, baby.

For desktops, nothing beats Windows.
For phones, nothing beats Pixel with Lineage.
For laptops nothing beats MacBooks.
For TVs nothing beats Android or Linux.
I just got my m4 MBP. Upgraded from the M2. I use different things for different purposes. I don't get why people get so worked up about os wars when you can just run whatever you want these days for very cheap. I just sold the m2 MBP for $250. I didn't need to make a lot off of it. I listed it for free but nobody messaged me.

yeah thats the one i have with the $95 fee, they must've just been promoting it last year or something when I got it. The sign on bonus was nice and i still use it for the 3% back on dining, but I didn't realize to really get your money's worth you have to use Chase travel. When I went to book flights last year, I saw that the Chase tickets were about $2-300 more expensive than ones I could just get on google flights, so I just bought them through that... kinda disappointed overall, but worth it for the bonus points if you were going to spend the money anyway.

I avoid using the T470 for opsec reasons but it’s broken air gap so it’s basically in vain. Not sure what I should do but I carry all 3 in a bag that I always have with me. Sometimes I wish/want to install another distro on the T470 and use it more
