Ok, the Gateron Longjing Tea switches have some serious double press issues. I've got one key that will sometimes triple input with a normal keystroke. These are brand new switches.

e.g. here's me spamming 321 on the numpad:
321
321
321
32221
3212
321
3221
321
321
321

Can't in good conscience recommend these switches. Avoid. Shame on Gateron.

If it's a hotswap board, you can probably check if there's something wrong with the "2" key's switch contacts that is causing a lot of chattering. Though the only easy way to definitively tell if it's a bounce issue would probably be through an oscilloscope.
That being said, it wouldn't be the first time a chink switch has had some QA issues.

Get any hotswap keyboard and put in silent switches and it'll get you 90% of the way there, then lube your stabilisers to take you from 90% to 99%.
You can do other mods to take it from 99% to 100%, but you really don't need to bother with that.

Intro S100 will have ISO support on all PCBs, and it's around that price. You'll have to spend a little more to actually acquire the switches and keycaps, but that'd be a nice board. Comes in a good off-white color too. Doesn't come in neutral white though.

Otherwise you can get a Keychron or a Varmilo. Not sure if there are other prebuilt 100% ISO options, those are the ones I know. Varmilo has a white one, I think.

Someone tell me the appeal of artisan keycaps. I look at so many of them with massive ears or pointy bits, and even if it's made with sturdy resin, there's no way you can get used to typing with that shit. And if it's not resin then you'd only feel bad about potentially fucking with the clay / glaze from the eventual wear and tear. Only the metal / resin caps seem to make any sense, and yet I see so many keyboards with odd shaped keys wtf.

They're usually used for macros and such, not switches you type with regularly.

I think they're almost always very ugly and I've never found one I liked or would use. Not ugly in themselves, mind you, but ugly when put on a keyboard. I think some of the metal ones could be ok, maybe.

okay bros, I'm not actually looking into getting a new keyboard at the moment. But a few months ago my homie asked me what keyboard he should get, and initially I said whatever the newest Ducky is, but started googling what's recommended now, and Ducky is apparently not top-tier anymore. Keychron seemed to be the consensus. He ended up ordering the Keychron Q6 Pro with the banana switches. So I guess my knowledge is out of date.
Is Ducky shit now or what? If I wanted to get a new keyboard, and I don't want to do all that building it with the soldering and rubberbands and complicated shit, MAYBE I will replace the keycaps with an aftermarket set down the line, what's the best now?

Why does every example image in this picture have such incredibly bright eyerape backlight?
my keyboard has relatively dim lighting, apparently target of complaints for not being strong enough. i usually dislike typical bright lamps and id rather have some colored moody weak lights instead, either from an actual lamp or some pc peripherals
i also dont believe in the "why do you need to look at the keyboard in the dark havent you memorized it all" stance : in my journey of autistic 150wpming and midnight programming, my rate of typos and innacuracies is definitely lower with backlight keyboards, i think theres some benefit from having it in the corner of your eye

>the other thing i came to inquire about
I know basically nothing about switches, using the archive mostly just has me finding people talking about mouse switches. What is this places' actual genuine consensus on optical shit? And what does it mean when some relatively cheaper keyboard from some cheaper brand (brahma pro)calls it "optical-mechanical" as opposed to just optical?

Akko 80% with jelly pink linear switches.

I don't know if it's a problem with the keyboard or what, but some keys don't always register on press (mostly Z, X, C keys). I swapped the switches around with less used switches from other keys, problem persists.

I need a numpad anyway, so I would like to just start over.

Basically want the best I can get without having to do any work on it myself because I find it to be tedious. My akko came pre-lubed and all that, so I imagine that's standard nowadays even if doing it yourself is "better".

Can spend a bit more if it'll get me something decently better. I have the money but I don't want to spend a retard amount on a keyboard.

Oh yeah fair. I was already used to a 65% so hitting fn+number is fine for me. I will say though that if you're playing insane games that need f-key bindings it is a slight hassle (I've never played one that has required fast access to them though so I've never really had a problem). The fact that you do have a right hand cluster honestly makes the F77 still better than a 75% in my opinion, because for example you can use the normal numpad flight controls in gmod or GTA and stuff.

Outside of games I barely ever notice it (but again I was already used to this).

Optical switches are neat in principle, however (unless something's changed recently, I haven't kept up closely) they're not really compatible with most PCBs and it's not easy to buy them separately in the first place, so you're mostly stuck with a very limited choice of gaymer-branded keyboards for it. As a result, you have to make a decision about the keyboard as a whole, you can't just decide you want opticals and then stick them into your favourite form factor and shell. Also because of the limited choice, while the concept is good I honestly don't know which individual switches are actually well made (smooth, not scratchy, not faulty...) or if there even are any that are good enough.

It's a solid board, very bang-for-your-buck. One issue I have, owning both a standard C64 edition and a 108-key Famicom edition, is that swapping switches out is annoying despite being hot-swappable because 8bitdo's sockets are stupidly tight. So if you don't like clicky switches (or specifically don't like Kailh Box Whites), then that's something to keep in mind.

As for the switches, I think they're just all slightly different flavours of linear, so you probably can't go wrong with any of them.

My Keychink K8 Pro started having issues just after 2 years. W key wouldn't active occasionally which was super frustrating. I punched the shit out of it eventually and the elevating clip behind it broke. Now it's a flat piece of crap on my desk that cost 130EUR.

Anyways, curious about some similar options (available in EU) in terms of style and size that ideally wouldn't shit itself in 2 years?

(Tips on recovering the piece of crap would be appreciated too)

Because of the way MX mechanical keyboards are designed. It's true that you can turn down the brightness but you can't change the incorrect way they distribute light.

It is sort of remarkable how far keyboard affordability has come in the past 3 years or so. It used to be that the boards you can get for ~100-200 now would cost at least $500 USD and there were no prebuilt options at all. Nowadays you can get a truly premium product for 100-200 and the more expensive keyboards are for true luxury items that you are buying for the aesthetics. Chinese manufacturers changed the game with economies of scale.

Also, that ±10 is the tolerance, you want it as low as possible unless you plan to swap springs. And most of the time, spring weight reported at the bottom, meaning it'll be heavier than just 40g.

If you want all that stuff I'd just get a Keychron Q6 Max (or V6 Max) ISO version. If it were me—well I'd probably get the Q because I love wasting money, but if it were me and I was serious about the budget—I'd get the V6 Max ISO and spend the rest of my budget on nicer switches and keycaps. I don't like the Gateron ones they use, the tolerances are all over the place, the springs are too light, and the lube job feels gummy.

anyway here's the link for the Q6 Max:

75% without a blocker is the only sensible 75% layout. There are a few such boards right now:

TKD Pt.1 75% (DeltaKeyCo, 229 euro)
Bridge75 (Monacokeys, 135 euro)
Neo75 Cu — $190, but no ongoing GB in europe. Don't know if Qwertykeys will ship to Europe since they had vendors there during the GB period. Maybe there will be another round in future though.

TKD would be my pick (linen coat), even though they're sold out of solder pcbs (hotswap, yuck). Comes with stabs so then I'd spend the rest of the money on buying Shenpo Beige keycaps from aliexpress ($35) and some switches.

Someone had asked a couple threads back about a silent build and Akko Penguin switches. I now have Penguin switches setup with my new Akko/Monsgeek M3W.

I like it a lot, and considering the price of the switches I think they would particularly be a great option toss onto a cheap hotswap board and get a nice soft/quiet setup for a good price. The market for mechanical keyboards has truly never been so good.

The keyboard is audible in a quiet room, but it's VERY quiet, tapping my fingers lightly on my desk or mousepad is about as loud. My mouse (DAv3Pro) is MUCH louder. It's much much quieter than the soft thock of using standard linear switches. I'm glad I chose a tactile switch for this build because it's nice to have a little feedback when the keyboard itself is so quiet, and the tactile bump helps prevent accidental presses.

The actuation point is slightly below the tactile bump, which can be noticeable when typing very lightly because it's possible to clear the tactile bump without actuating the switch, so these switches encourage bottoming out more and that means they would probably pair best with a softer build (gasket, flex-cut, soft/PC plate) compared to a harder build (solid pcb, no gasket, etc). In practice I basically never notice this, but it is possible to do if I am doing it intentionally.

I'm very happy with the amount of force required to press the keys, and I don't have any problems with accidental presses like I do with lighter/linear keys. They feel just right to me. Thanks for reading my blog, fellow autists.

As for keycaps, Womier stuff on Aliexpress is the best price/performance you can get, they're about $10 and don't have visible flaws. KBDiy do decent GMK clones, and Yong Qiu stuff is fine if you're getting dye subs, but avoid their doubleshot keycaps because the quality on the legends is laughable. Plenty of other stuff out there, but I haven't had experience with them so you'll have to rely on reviews with images instead.

Just got a Topre NGO100 Realforce board that I recently won for cheap (relative to typical Topre prices) on a Japanese auction site; it's my first time using Topre switches. It's certainly a nice smooth typing experience, the build quality is pretty good, and these are by far the best rubber domes I've used, but I'd be absolutely underwhelmed if I paid typical Topre switch prices or anywhere close. I paid enough where I'm glad to have it in my collection despite not not being my favorite board. If nothing else, it's a great candidate for a "night time" keyboard to not disturb my roommates with.

Also, it's JIS layout, so I've gotta get used to it, but that's purely a "me" problem.

-gasket-mount rather than tray mount (better)

If they were shorting against the bottom, I would think that your system would interpret that as a keypress. You could just put a sheet of paper between the board and the case if you want to do a quick test.

As much as I like Topre, I would have a really hard time recommending it to someone in current year.

After using Topre for 10+ years cherry-mechanical style keyboards have advanced leaps and bounds through experimentation with different case materials, plate materials, mounting styles, etc in order to come up with a more pleasant user experience, whereas Topre has stayed Topre. There's still no market for Topre-stem keycaps. Topre boards no longer compete (off the shelf) with multilayer gasket/etc designs. Even Topre's incredible durability isn't a big deal when the competition has hotswap sockets now.

That's the impression I've been getting. Again, happy to have this board in my collection for how much I got it for ($70ish including expedited shipping) and as an alternative nighttime keyboard, but there's no way I'd be remotely happy if I paid anywhere resembling MSRP or the general western asking prices for a Topre board. And people paying hundreds of dollars for rubber goddamn domes on a formfactor as stripped down as HHKB are outright fucking retards.
>There's still no market for Topre-stem keycaps.
To be fair, there do exist kits to replace the standard Topre cylinder mounts with MX-compatible ones. I don't know the details of them or how well-done they are though, and frankly I'm almost certainly not gonna bother. I might look into replacement domes for ~45g weighting across the (literal) board later, but that's not a certainty either.

The original Keychron V6 ISO is available for some languages in at least their .com and .de webstores (only ones I bothered to check):
https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v6-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard-iso-layout-collection?variant=40384084148313
https://keychron.de/products/keychron-v6-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard-iso-layout-collection?variant=42027999625353

However, the Max version is potentially superior even if used wired only, as it has gasket mount. Even if you don't care about the travel, gasket mount can help substantially dampen sound. Also according to reviews the Max has lower latency, which might be relevant for gaming or something.

>>103929552
V6 Max has excellent latency behavior wired, at least according to this:
https://www.rtings.com/keyboard/reviews/keychron/v5-max-v1-max-v2-max-etc#test_22196

Also I've read that some people have just disconnected the battery on their wireless keychron, and the boards work fine wired. Don't quote me on that though

found one for £300 used and local.

layout was ANSI even though we're in the UK, and the seller hadn't bought any extra flippers or springs, so i transplanted the guts of the Fn key to down between Lshift and z, removed the Fn barrel and taped over the gap. shit's good enough for now. taking the layers apart and putting them back together isn't hard.

keys were harvested from an ibm model m, only the spacebar is original to the new F.

actuation force is much lower than my 1993 model M. noise is generally similar but louder.

problems: the period key hits the spacebar wire and makes a loud click. possibly this is the ibm keycaps' fault, i'll give them a chance to get to know each other, it'll probably stop once there's a groove worn in the key.
vertical stabiliser on num+ was chewed to fuck, like the previous guy had tried to pull it with a wood screw. key was working fine so who knows?

Got my Ellipse Model F77 repro a bit ago, here's my first impressions blogpost from somebody who mainly used Cherry MX customs prior.
It arrived about 35-36 days from the time that I ordered it (I'm in NA). I got it on sale for $250 without any of the extraneous bullshit, since there was no way I was going to pay $400+ for a keyboard that I've heard has some issues. The board arrived with keycaps in a separate bag, and it was simple to follow the installation process. The online manual and instructional video are definitely the product of fucking amateur hour, but if you're over 50 IQ, it shouldn't be hard to figure this thing out at all. I installed one key wrong, resulting in a mushy, non-clicky feel - reinstalling it took ten seconds. No issues with missing or broken components on my end, though the keycaps arrived with some minor manufacturing scuffs on a few of them. The board itself is a fucking tank and it feels great to bash on. There's zero flex, stem wobble, nothing. However, I had to adjust the spacebar because it was rattling like a motherfucker. This was also a simple fix - just had to bend the stabilizer tabs down towards the backplate, took less than fifteen seconds each. Firmware programming is your standard QMK affair with creating a layout, compiling it to a hex file, and flashing it. I'm a Linuxchad, so it was a bit simpler with dfu-programmer. As for the buckling springs themselves, I love them. I thought boomers were just baseding out over nostalgia, but these supremely crisp, like the keyboard version of McDonald's Sprite. I think they've single-handledly ruined other tactiles for me, actually, which surprised me because I thought I would hate the ping with a fiery passion. Most of the time with custom boards, that's a sign of cheap construction. But here it feels accentuated, deliberate, purposeful, like it belongs. Overall, I quite like this board and will probably daily drive it for a long while. We'll see if I get ratfucked later by defects.

I have an earlier F77 (a painted zinc-alloy case), and I've been loving the actual board myself too. My only issue is that the paintjob is pretty shabby and comes off too easily. I think the paint method was changed with the recent switchover to aluminum cases, but I'm not sure. Something to possibly keep an eye out for.

I'm tempted to get an F104 down the road, but I wanna wait to see more about how well they hold up with other owners (and not just Youtubers chummy with Ellipse).

It's just time consuming. If you plan on doing more switch swapping consider soldering in single hotswap sockets like Mill-max or alternatives from Ali https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007593692562.html

If you care about the sound a keyboard makes, you are too-into things and need to re-evaluate your life. Keyboards should be silent if used in a shared space, if you aren't in a shared space, the "sound" it makes does not matter.

Is there a particular type of switch I should look out for? I keep seeing 3 and 5 pin switches. How do I know what I should get and would fit the board?

Sorry, I'm just not very interested in PVP shit anymore. Don't really know much besides just hearing that through the grapevine, you're better off just searching around.

Quite particular to MX Purple, but they're just Ergo Clears with a longer ~55g spring

3-pin switches just have the big peg in the center and the two metal pins that connect to the keyboard wiring. 5-pin switches have two additional smaller plastic pins to the left and right of the big center peg.
It really only matters for two reasons:
- If you're doing a plateless build (as in you're attaching the switches directly to the PCB without using a plate with the square switch cutouts in it) 5-pins will prevent the switch from twisting.
- Whether or not you're doing a plateless, you need to make sure that your PCB has the corresponding holes for the extra pins on a 5-pin if you decide to purchase 5-pin switches. 3-pins are compatible with 5-pin PCBs, but not vice-versa (unless you cut off the plastic pins yourself).

Not him, but in that picture for those sockets that anon linked you can see the kind of PCB that would fit a 5-pin switch, since that's the switch used in the render too. The only way to know what you have is to open it up and see if your switches have those two extra plastic pins on the side of the center pin (where the switch slider/stem bottoms out). You can most likely do this without desoldering anything and just looking at the back of the PCB.
Also, you can generally make 5-pin switches fit 3-pin only PCBs by just using a flush cutter to snip off the two plastic pins. On the other hand if you have a PCB that accomodates 5-pin switches they would work with 3-pin switches too.

My topre realforce r3s silent 45g arrived and it's nice but hitting the unsilenced keys makes me wish I had gotten the unsilenced model.

you can make it unsilent yourself by removing the rings between the housing and sliders.

as far as pre-made gaymer slop goes, what is the consensus around logitech g512 carbon? Considering picking one up to replace my g815. I like the flat keys alright but I do miss the standard keyboard keys a bit. Local best buy has an open boxed refunded one for $75 so I'm thinking real hard about it.

If your only options are MX blues and browns and the board doesn't have hotswap support, I'd give it a miss.

update after 1 year. the kbd8x mkiii has emerged as the endgame board for me and spends months at a time on my desk without ever being disconnected. i've tried a few other custom boards in the meantime here and there, and only the kbdfans PCB has been rock-solid reliable in obeying my command to keep the niggerlight turned off. most QMK, VIA, and Vial PCBs are unbelievably bad at that, but the kbd8x mkiii PCB does exactly as i command and even remembers for months what to do, even as other PCBs forget after mere weeks and wake up running their idiot light show after being plugged in.

unquestionably recommended. worth every fucking penny. the case finish is lovely. i built it in top mount with the polycarbonate plate and tried a few different switches before finally settling on invyr HPs.

This anon here >>103937044 is right. Hotswap support, especially on a board approaching (let alone entering) the three-digit USD mark, is a must these days. Especially since the three basic Cherry switches (including clones of them) are pretty mediocre compared to the wide variety of other MX-compatible switches that exist outside of Cherry's range these days.

its never been better to be into topre. there are new keycap sets being made, URSA for example. amano keycaps both oem and hipro sets, sho aluminum or polycarbonate cases for hhkb or realforce r1, super abundant and cheap housings and mx sliders from aliexpress, klc, or deskeys. different types of domes, custom pcbs, including a new hybrid pcb that support mx on one side and topre on the other. it's also gotten much cheaper to get into imo and there is a lot of stuff customize with. stock is amazing don't get me wrong, it's really good. i have one, with aged domes, it's very nice. but i also have custom build topre too. of course the market of mx oriented stuff exponentially dwarfs the electro-capacitive / conical keyboard market but it's not as limited as you would think.

I went with these. I'm also considering swapping the Mambo Mint switches with Gateron G Yellow Pros if they are worth looking at.
