I have a Lenovo Thinkpad P15v. The Lenovo Universal Docking Station, which should support it, has 1x HDMI and 2x DisplayPort. Does that mean that a docking station can convert a laptop's video output into a DisplayPort monitor, even though the laptop has only HDMI output on itself?
And a followup question to that, are there any negative consequences if I then use this
>ThinkPad ->(USB-C)-> Docking Station -> one of it's Display Port slots -> (DisplayPort to VGA or DVI adapter) -> monitor's DVI/VGA slot
?
And a followup to the followup question, if I were to convert to VGA or DVI, which of the conversions is worse?

Did anyone else get a blackscreen --> bluescreen loop on start up after updating nvidia drivers around november/december? I also am suspecting the nvidia app replacing geforce experience may be causing it.
I been having the problem for past 2 weeks since, the weird thing is sometimes after 1-3 forced resets it doesn't black screen, also sometimes mashing f8 at bios would work although I dont know why. Only thing I've found that consistently fixes the issue is booting to safe mode and uninstalling the new nvidia drivers.

What is the current recommended video editing software? I need it for cutting scenes out of a movie that is in MKV format, but it would be random 1-2 sec scenes out of several minutes, so not just something that I can do easily with virtualdub.

It's FOSS and easy to use, the only issue is that it can be buggy sometimes and you can't do super complex stuff with it, but if you just need to do general video editing it'll do almost anything you need Premiere to do.

Old laptop was starting to play up, fresh install of windows came up with warning that hard drive was failing, ignored, proceeded to install. Worked well for 30mins and then harddrive proceeded to die. Pulled it apart, turns out hard drive was a SATA m.2. Obviously been out of the loop for some time because my first time seeing one, and now going to order a new one find out they are already pretty much redundant tech. I feel old.

Yes, SATA flash storages aren't a thing any more, SATA keeps living for HDDs only.
idk what was the point in doing SATA over M.2 connectors anyway as mSATA already existed for le laptop/miniPC usage.

Hey, /g/, my OS drive is running low on space. I bought a new drive ages ago and now that i'm out of work, I figure now would be a good time as any to move now that i've got time.
Should I just install my current copy of windows to the new drive and then copy over all my old data? Or is that a no-no?
if so, would installing W10 to that drive *and then* re-downloading a backup of my files be the smarter move?

Actually stupid question about storing HDDs outside of case.
Most modern cases I see have limited space for hard drives, which are still cheapest option for storing large amount of data, which becomes a problem if I would want to have a raid setup for example. Many people right away suggest NAS server but here is a problem - they apparently have to run 24/7, at least according to any article I found when I typed related question to search engine. Since I don't use my PC when I'm outside of home, it would be huge waste of energy - with 30W power consumption (seems to be average for 4 drive NAS), such device would cost me whooping 1/4 of my current yearly electricity bill. To be honest, I don't exactly understand why I can't just have separate box that would turn on and off along with PC. Meanwhile "external HDD bays" at shops are apparently all using USB, which will result in awfully slow access.
I admit I'm stupid in these things. Do I really lack other options?

DVI is always better but it is a clusterfuck of signals because it can be digital or analog so you need the right cable.
USB-C has its own video lanes, no conversion needed, you can probably still use the native HDMI along with the dock.

Having an issue where torrenting fucks up my PC's internet with no effect on anything else in my house. Tried a bunch of different clients and settings and it always eventually happens and stays off until I turn airplane mode on and off again to restart the internet to get the torrent moving again, and then it repeats like that until the file is finished. The same happens when I try downloading something larger than maybe a gigabyte.
Does anyone know what I could do to diagnose the issue? I'm on a wireless connection on Kubuntu and as I said it doesn't seem to effect anything else in my house so I'd really appreciate some help understanding this because obviously it's very annoying.

I know the reputation this site has and how meme it is when it comes to AMD, but is there any alternative to their tool for getting a very quick overview of your PC to see you have everything working relatively in order?
It used to be my go-to tool to just run after assembling a new PC for someone and seeing everything is performing at least within range of expected in comparison to other people, and helped me find out a few times when I had forgotten to install RAM correctly by telling me it was performing way under expected.
Is there seriously no alternative?

So SD cards can get quite large nowadays and some people use them for storage on SB computers...
How viable would they be to have as an external drive with an SO installed that could be carried around and plugged on other computers and booted from? Like having a notebook but without the notebook or an SSD with all my software and SO that I can boot on any computer I have access to at the moment? I get pendrives really aren't cut out for this type of work but would an SD card do it well?

You could use a technique from relational databases. To represent a Many-to-Many relationship you might make:
a table of users containing a single column of user names
a table of websites containing a single column of website names
an intermediary/bridge/joining table containing two columns where each column is a column from the two other tables. For example, a row would look like: user_name | website_name
This would allow you to represent as many users on as many websites as you want.
That said, this would be quite annoying to work with using just csv files so maybe not :P

To replicate the setup I may replace, I'm trying to turn it into a WiFi AP.
I eventually got the thing to show up on my phone, it gets an IP but my phone cannot do anything with the connection, even pinging the IP of the AP or router.
Using tcpdump on the AP shows the DHCP exchange and some amount of ipv6 crap I don't understand, but IPv4 is basically dead silent.
I did find IPv4 forwarding was 0 on the AP, but I presume I don't need to reboot after setting to 1...

How safe / sensible is it to buy chinkshit laptops from AliExpress?
I wanna optimise the specs of my next laptop so that it lasts the next 10 years and handles whatever demands there are in the future. In particular, I'd like to get one with an i9 core. However, I'm also a cheapskate and don't wanna pay any more than about £300. There's some options for this on AliExpress, like the below. Would it be stupid to buy one like this?

I need a script to save a user's tweets as they get posted. They have a habit of deleting them soon after.
Another constraint is that their tweets are protected, so I'd need to be logged in/go through the X API (I think).
I don't need their old tweets necessarily; I want an ongoing archive that I can run in the background.
Searching on Google has been pretty useless, lots of paid services for something seemingly very simple and runnable locally, in say a browser extension.

TLDR What do i do if my laptop got left in extreme humidity (no water damage) and grew mold

Dry it out and turn it on. Water damages electronics in two ways: firstly it causes shorts which can nuke chips. Secondly it causes corrosion in circuitry and breaks connections. The second is more fixable than the first since restoring a broken connection is easier than unnuking a chip.

It is a physical device, but it's crammed inside the CPU chip so you don't get to see it.
And RAM can be static or dynamic. They differ in how they achieve the same goal, with static being faster (very important for cache) but also more expensive (which is why cache is much smaller than your usual RAM modules). Dynamic is the other way around, it's slower but it's cheaper so you can have modules with crazy storage capacities.

It would be hard to make more in the short to mid term than just selling them second hand, especially when you're presumably paying consumer running costs for anything you're renting out.
with higher end cards you could set up a local chatbot server (or image gen, but you'll probably end up with illegal content and getting vanned) and privately (eg. paypal, cashapp each month for a key rent out the use of a decent model for uncensored use and pick up a decent amount, but its effort to manage and decent amount of manual work and you'd have to find people yourself. probably a decent time to try though given the online options are getting more and more restricted.

Cache is an ultrafast type of volatile memory storage that acts as a buffer between the CPU and the normal RAM modules.
RAM is a category of fast volatile memory storage, used to run stuff while the computer is on. RAM can be either SRAM or DRAM, which differ in construction and speed.
Because of its advantages, SRAM is the type of RAM used for making CPU cache. But that's not it's only use and you can find SRAM IC chips on boards for other stuff, like arduino boards and the like.

The old adage is SRAM works and DRAM doesn't. SRAM stores each bit in a loop of semiconductors which is naturally reinforced by bus power. It's instant access and can even be accessed by multiple devices at the cell level. If the semiconductors naturally retain gate charge like FET types, which is all modern chips, it can retain data for a long time even without power. If you have a small battery to maintain power bus voltage, it retains data basically until the battery self-discharges. Which is often 20 years or more.
DRAM uses nature of FETs to store one bit on one semiconductor gate. Which means it naturally wants to lose data and you need controller logic to periodically refresh each cell. Which means higher latency because every access has to be fenced through the controller, and periods where cells are inaccessible because mandatory timed refreshes.

There's two types of CAD, parametric and non-parametric.
If you're trying to make replacement parts and technical pieces you'd want to learn the former and if you want to do artsy stuff like in your pic you'd want the later.
For parametric CAD I use FreeCAD but I'm the first to admit I only do so because SolidWorks is too expensive. TinkerCAD is very basic and limited, I wouldn't bother wasting time learning it, you'll grow out of it too quickly if you serious about this. If you're in college there's student version of AutoDesk crap (Fusion and AutoCAD) you can check out but I'd rather have FreeCAD over those. OnShape is another one some people use but it's browser based.
For non-parametric I can't really say much as I don't do that, but some people I know use Blender or 3D scanning of IRL stuff and just make copies of that.

databases noob here.
is there a way to predict total tuples that would be lost/generated if we were to perform n iterations of lossy decomposition on a relation, with an iteration of lossy decomposition involving a decomposition & join op'n? Does the amount depend on the way in which the decomposition happened(total relations a given relation was decomposed to in each iteration, the kind of partioning attribute- i.e the common attribute that I will inadvertently use when performing joins,)?
Consider the examples relations below:
STUDENT(primary key(rollno), name)
tuples of STUDENT:(1011,john)(1012,mark)(1013,bob)
FACULTY(primary key(facultyid),facultyname)
tuples of FACULTY:
(728,henry);(729,stefan);(730,mary)
COURSE(primary key(coursecode),coursename, credits)
tuples of COURSE:
(c133,database,4);(c134,c programming,3);(c135,system design,3)
ENROLLS(primary key(rollno,coursecode,session),facultyid)
tuples of ENROLLS:
(1011,c133,728,jan 2020);(1012,c133,729,jan 2020);(1013,c133,729,jan 2020);
(1011,c134,729,jan 2020);(1012,c134,729,jan 2020);(1013,c134,730,jan 2020)
Performing lossy decomposition on ENROLLS by splitting ENROLLS into STUDENT_COURSE(rollno,coursecode) and FACULTY_COURSE(facultuid,coursecode) and then joining them, we end up with double the amount of tuples.

USB-C is less durable than USB-A by a huge amount, the only pro about it is the extra signal and power cables.
Mouse/Keyboard, USBs, Audio, etc moves 1MB/s tops of data and use less than 1A, more than enough, there is no reason to change other than promote planned obsolecense.
USB-C is also a failed standard since outside the port shape there is no standard that everyone needs to follow.

Sounds like you don't know what installers do. Pick the "partition manually" option and install to whatever already existing NTFS partition - nuking the old install, if any. Or do a fresh install effectively wiping a partition.

In which case, there's no point in trying to make an account with a public temporary phone number, since the verification code and the number are gonna be visible to the public, so the account is guaranteed to get hijacked, right?

And obviously this is at 480p with 20 fps, but the rip was probably at lower resolution.
So is there a way to upscale and enhance the overall picture?

Actually literally bricking something? Then the answer is no. Accidentally deleting wrong partitions? Yes.

After undervolting my 3070ti with good results i decided to undervolt my CPU as well.
I'm still pretty new to this stuff, so i just looked up a video online on what to do with my 5900x.
I found this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfkrp25dpQ0&t=313s
that basically says to go into your bios, set core optimizer to All Cores and set negative 30.
Everything was fine yesterday, but just 10 minutes ago i alt-tabbed from a game and opened a YouTube tab in my browser.
That made my computer freeze and reboot completely.
Is this because the undervolt is too aggressive? What should i set it to? Or is there a better way? Thanks

No market for PS/2 mouses as mouses are used by laptop people too and laptops don't come with PS/2 -> PS/2 is now a keyboard-only connector -> now you have this snowflake thing hardwired to the CPU and it serves nothing but the keyboard.
ALTHOUGH keyboard is in many cases essential so it still makes sense to have dedicated wiring to the CPU. But it sums up to more crap -> more cost.

I'm broke and am a little too knee deep in my current occupation to afford switching over to another professionality but I really wanna learn networking and dealing with data. Does anyone have any good online courses or resources they could recommend? Much appreciated fiends.

No ebooks readers thread so I'll try here. I'm an happy Kobo user but an author I like has self published on Amazon his books. I don't want to buy the books + a Kindle reader (that seems stupid since I already own one I like) but I can put my hands on my father Kindle (one of the oldest, probably pic related, no touch screen, no backlight) he no longer uses anymore. Probably it requires changing account but old Kindles are still able to read new (2023-2024) Amazon e-books with ease? I already give a try to buy the ebook, download it and convert it in epub format with Calibre but it seems encrypted.

Your copy is in pdf, right? Can you open it normally on PC? Can it open fine on Kobo as a pdf? If so, why not try a different method for converting it into epub or, if you don't mind, just read it in pdf. All my ebooks are in pdf.

Yep. Win likes to update at the time of those updates sometimes break dual boot, grub screen or generally lock you out of one of the OS (sometimes it even locks you out of itself, it's kind of funny when it isn't happening to you).
You want dual drive dual boot and make sure to put the grub screen on the linux drive, not with windows. If you want to save on cost, and your current SSD has plenty of space left, get a smaller SSD just for linux OS and other system stuff and use the win SSD for general storage (all my music, pics, books and stuff like that are on the windows SSD, I can access it just fine with linux).

There's even a way to set temp containers.

You're using a common laptop? in that case just use portable version of firefox on your usb, or better yet boot live USB

So then, do I have to use the firmware's boot manager to simply select which drive I want to boot from, or can a single instance of systemd-boot or grub2 boot from either drive?

I set the linux drive to be the priority boot option in the BIOS, then installed it with the grub screen on that drive. Whenever I boot up the PC I'm taken to the grub screen and can select what OS I want.
It was an standard install on a fresh SSD, I just took the time to unplug the old SSD so linux wouldn't touch it and to ensure the grub screen was on the new SSD. You can do the same via software if you want, I just like the certainty of unplugging things.
