/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.
>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.
>What software should I run?
Install FreeBSD. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, etc. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

Had this working an hour ago, but all I did was restart networkmanager on the host and somehow that was enough. Destroyed the container (needed some changes) brought it back up, and now I can only ping ips inside it.
I have a virtual network interface pair, veth and ceth. veth is slave to br0. ceth can only ping 1.1.1.1 once I add default route via gateway address, but this isn't enough to ping domain names. What gives? Internet searches have been useless.

How much of a fire hazard is 10 HDDs on a single PSU cable?
I did the voltage drop calculations and both the 12v and 5v rails would experience a 2.5% drop on a 1m cable with 12a and 6a of current respectively.
It seems fine but I'm wondering if anyone has experienced dropped drives as a result of ten drives or so on a cable.
I have 40 HDDs to potentially power and 4 modular cables is the only way to really divide it. I'm getting custom cables so it should be better than daisy chaining chinese mystery meat sata power cables.

Got it working by starting the wireguard service in the container first. I guess without it I don't have nameservers, but it makes no difference really.

So it finally seems to be stable (was able to transfer 4TB of data via SSH without a disconnect/crash midway). It still disconnected/rebooted after putting in a cheap 1Gb TP-Link NIC to replace the onboard 2.5 Intel one (which apparently has a ton of issues). I ended up reinstalling truenas twice and updating the BIOS, so I'm not sure what the problem was. Once I'm certain it's 100% stable I'll look into upgrading to 10Gb. Also need to get a UPS. I didn't think setting up a NAS would be so stressful...
By the way am I retarded for using SSHFS instead of NFS? The lack of encryption with NFS makes me paranoid, but maybe that doesn't matter if I'm only using it on my local network. I've heard about Kerberos but I'm too much of a brainlet to set it up.

So I was able to get this stuff last year but shit happened and never got to move forward with this build.
>3 Dell PowerEdge R730 servers.
>Each R730 has 2x Intel Xeon E5-2680 CPUs.
>128GB RAM each.
>Mirrored 256 GB SAS on all three R730s.
Currently running old 2015 OS -- ESXi 6.0.0 3073146.
These were connected to a network storage:
>Dell EMC VNXe 3200 SAN
>Connected to the ESXI hosts is via dual Fiberchannel switches.
> System utilizes 10K SFF SAS Drives
>Approximately 9tb.
This SAN is running on 2015 firmware -- 3.1.5.6801782.
I don't have any network switches yet but my employer is about to have me install 2 Ubiquiti 48+2 enterprise switches. They'll be giving me:
3 Cisco Switches
>2 Cisco SG300-52P
>1 Cisco SG300-24P
I have (15) fifteen 14tb easystore drives ready to shuck. They're all unopened, brand new. I haven't test them since I bought them years ago. Hope they're good.
Anything that I absolutely should keep? Anything I should consider tossing/replacing immediately?
I'll definitely need a server rack to throw all of this into.
A disk shelf to pop all of my shucked HDDs into.
Might consider replacing the Cisco switches with new Ubiquiti switches.
Any suggestions?

Shit, really?
I mean, I don't have to use it. It's only 9TB.
Would like to use the dual fiberchannels with it connected to the R730s but that's less than a single 14tb drive for more noise, power, electricity.

Just installed debian on top of endeavorOS, but I didn't realize they use different bootloaders (grub and systemd-boot)
Now I can't boot into debian, because the system boots from systemd-boot, and my endeavorOS seems to be broken because of disk corruption?
Though this is a spare laptop I'm using, so nothing was lost. But can you even dual boot if your 2 systems use different bootloaders?

I'm not opposed to building my own, but I much prefer this compact form-factor and there don't seem to be any comparable DIY enclosures out there.

It all fits into 1TB so unless you're hoarding stuff it's basically impossible to fill that up with anything meaningful.

The build I speced out calls for 14 drives. I'm doing it as 2 7 drive raidz2 sets. 20TB drives. It'll be about $3000 for 7, and I've just been waiting for a good deal to pop up. I've been having issues with makemkv, and setting up a remote desktop in a virtual machine on the sever. I've kinda given up on it till I get the first set of hard drives and move my data and services to this build from my current one. Then I can set up the current one as a backup.

So I am new to this whole home server nas shit. I installed TrueNAS and got my NAS SMB share working, jellyfin working, and makeMKV working all through TrueNAS. MakeMKV works perfectly for ripping all of my DVD/BR discs to my NAS and jellyfin plays them perfectly.
I am wondering how to do the same for my CD's, is there an app on TrueNAS that does CD ripping? People were saying to just use a windows VM and install EAC on it but I have never screwed around with a VM and it sounds kind of janky.
My goal is to eventually have le ultimate media ripping home server.

How does NFS storage handle serving files for clients?
because when I run
I get a list of all device connected to the nfs even those that are powered off.
Also is there a way to enable or show automatic NFS/SMB share detection on network? for file explorer (Thunar/Dolphine)?

Built your own NAS. With Synology you're limited to a 4.x kernel. It's fine for starting but if you start doing anything that is outside the realm of the synology app store (anything up to date) you will have a lot of headaches. Hope you like tinkering.

The reason usually to get something like a synology is you need a play & play solution that works and which is used by a lot of people (in case you have problems).
One snag of getting a synology is they tend to lag a bit on important stuff like fast networking ootb on consumer models. Also the consumer base relentlessly moans that synology has lost their way and next time they're going to switch to some barely proven alternative with great specs but terrible software or a frankenstein truenas setup.
For reference, I bought an earlier model synology around 8 years ago and its still getting updates, its quite possibly one of the best nas solutions I've ever bought.

it's not too bad. It's more or less a final solution. NFS outperforms it, but SSHFS is simple. Just install openssh-server (I think) and you can remotely access files over SSH. barely any tinkering needed

I just changed my windows server to ubuntu, everything is fine but is there a way to download torrents without having to install X11, qbittorrent and a ton of dependencies? I've heard of rtorrent but I'm an idiot and couldn't figure that out.

I bought an N100 mini PC for my Plex server and it's working well. Right now I'm just running files off an external HDD that's permanently plugged in. However, I stupidly invited friends to use it, and now I'm worried it's going to struggle if 3-4 people start watching content
I can get an i5 12450H mini PC for $450, which would improve performance by 3x. At that price point, am I better off just spending ~$800 and building a mini ATX computer and have internal HDD storage?

Seconding Alpine, though it does have a tiny bit of a retard filter in that it's super minimal so a lot of common packages you'll see referenced in random google guides don't exist or aren't super straightforward to find. You can't just turn your brain off and copy/paste commands from a guide if something goes wrong like you can with say Ubuntu, so you need to be able to at least form two distinct thoughts at a time to use it properly.

I'd recommend it based on my limited experience, though a faster PC would be nicer even just for navigating through programs

Why is creating own certificate for local domain is so fucking hard? I do everything according to guide and then my certificate is not valid. Turns out browsers don't give a shit about common name and they only look at subjectAltName. And then when you try to import root ca in android it requires private key for whatever fucking reason. Turns out you had to add basicConstraints = CA:TRUE property to root certificate...

Is this even possible? I was thinking of splitting the v100 into 4 vGPUs but I don't know how to get video signal out of them.

I'm tempted to pull the card out of the server and stick it in my 7800X3D build just to see if there's any bottleneck on transcoding but I'm also lazy

This is an old build I just replaced with newer hardware. I wanna use it to play around with my own home server and start learning some Linux and stuff. Storage is still a work in progress but should be around 1-2 TB in old hard drives.
For starters I wanted to make some kind of Google Drive alternative for my family and go from there. Do you think it's worth it to use this setup? I don't play to have it always running to minimize power consumption.
Also, what else do you think I could do with it? Is it good enough to maybe host some game servers? I don't really wanna start a Plex server or something yet since I like to just use good old mpv for anime/movies/series, so I was wondering what else could I do with the GPU instead of video transcoding.

N100 is good for low power, but you must be aware of SATA port splitting. N100 only supports 2xSATA natively and these boards have ~6. Further, most have Realtek only ethernet and while they do work, it's not optimal.
My advice: Get something like ASRock N100M and fine tune it to your needs.
I'd get:
>Intel NIC
>USB-C HDD enclosure for extra storage
For the later, while a PCI-e x1 -> SATA adapter could work, t's usually a hit-or-miss, there are a lot of issues reported

Is there anywhere that sells cpu/MB bundles for cheap in the UK?
I am looking to upgrade by old e1226v3 server and want something cheap. The server is mostly used as an email and plex server right now.
Almost anything will be an upgrade so I am hoping to get something without spending too much. I am planning on keeping the PSU/Case/disks that I currnelty have as they are all running fine.
I have found a Ryzen 5 5600G + ASUS TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS no ram bundle for £180 which seems about the cheaest I can find. An intel build looks to be more expensive.
I dont want an old office pc (dell/HP etc) as they dont use standard motherboards so it will be a headache to fit it into the server case I have.

I have a project I plan to use for work. I'm trying to replace a 2U dell r760 with a miniPC. I think the big issue would be network bandwidth. We use the computer to upload (60GB) images to other computers so the server itself needs proper throughput. 10Gbps is too slow, really. 40 is the minimum.
Linux OS, of course. The new NVIDIA digits would be... an expensive solution that would probably work.
Simple solution is a mini-pc with a PCIe card that can support a connect X 7 card. Then I can plug in an OSFP optic > rock&roll. (perhaps cooling will be an issue, and I should step down to connect X 6)
But I'm brainstorming. Thunderbolt 5 to external PCIe 4/5?
Is 40Gbps possible in a form factor like I'm thinking?

Managed to get an old PC set up as a basic Samba file server for my home network, I've set up SnapRAID on it with a pair of 12TB HDDs: one of them is my parity drive, the other is storage.
My question is, if I add more drives to the system, will the parity drive actually be big enough? It's already filling up at the same rate as my storage drive, yet the SnapRAID FAQ says you can sync up to four disks to a single parity disk.

I'm currently running NextCloud with Memories to handle photos. It works but it's a bit basic and feels dated. I'm thinking of moving photos over to Immich but I'm not quite sure how I'm going to manage storage. I don't mind having everything in NextCloud but I don't think Immich could access the photos in the NextCloud folder because of permissions.
I also hate the web office suite NextCloud uses, it's slow as fuck and multiple times I've had spreadsheets wiped while using it.

I was looking at that one but disappointed it only has two SATA ports, though understandable as you explained. Rather than jerry-rig something, it would probably make more sense to just get a regular ITX motherboard and some relatively low power CPU that can properly handle four SATA ports. I presume that exists.

Next question I guess, how do I remotely access my server so I can run it without a keyboard and screen? Specifically I'd like to be able to use the desktop environment on it so I can download torrents with it.

It's a rasberry pi 4 with 4 gigs of ram. First attempt at getting it working with pi-hole and pivpn was a failure. sometime between getting pihole and pivpn setup, i screwed up some dns setting, and it couldn't connect to the internet.
Reinstalled pivpn today, and it actually worked. took me maybe like 15 minutes. I found that old 64 gig sandisk ssd and the sata - usb cable under my bed, plugged it in and it just werked.
Next thing I do will probably be getting a 1tb drive to replace the 64 gig one.
I did have a few questions though. Would it be worth it to use an ssd as a boot drive? i've got log2ram installed, but i'm still not convinced the card will last.
Also, what should I do security wise? I've got fail2ban installed, and the only internet facing service is wireguard. Is there anything else I should do? eddsa ssh logins?

I bought a cheap USB 2x3.5" RAID enclosure a while ago, and modified it to have a Pi 4 inside its enclosure, but the shitty USB enclosure just shows up as two drives even when set to RAID 1. So I'm thinking of removing its circuit boards and plugging the drives directly into an SBC instead. But from what I can see, there's not really many options for SBCs with two SATA ports on them, the only ones I saw were expensive x86 boards with enormous heat sinks that wouldn't fit in the enclosure
Is my only option to go for a Pi 5 or similar SBC with PCIe, and then use a PCIE to SATA breakout board? Because the Pi 5 isn't that cheap, and then the PCIe to SATA breakout is another hundred dollars, and even then it might not fit.
This is sunk cost fallacy, isn't it? Maybe I should ditch the enclosure and buy a little desktop mobo. Probably ARM for low power use, or RISC-V if I want to be even more of a freetard. Is there anything I can actually use this enclosure for?

Hi. I have a small nas running truenas scale and jellyfin for hosting media. Files are shared with smb. Most things work, however I'd like to rip blu-rays and dvds straight to my nas using the drive in my linux pc. When I try to do so, makemkv gives a permission denied error. What permissions do I have to set to allow me to do that? I've already tried creating a user on the nas with the same username and id as the user on my linux pc, and giving that user full control over the smb share, but no luck. Thanks in advance.

i'm wondering if it has been compromised since it still receives updates every now and then. how many updates should an encryption program need?
since it's such a big deal for privacy i was hoping there would be community-made version of the source code and a check against the official binaries. as well as a comb through of the source of course.

>how many updates should an encryption program need?
Ideally something focused on encryption gets updates regularly. This isn't a calculator that's just objectively done when it's done, 1+1 is still going to be 2 in 20 or 2000 years. Encryption on the other hand is much more complicated, best practices change, bugs get found and patched, new tech replaces old, some older schemes might just become obsolete and needs to be removed, etc.

1. For all your most important files make a tiny backup PC that you can easily carry with you. Just grab it and go, or even have it in your car or some shit, I don't know
2. Have an off-site backup at a family or friends house. Something small and power efficient so it doesn't bother them.
3. Use a service like backblaze. It's $99 a year for unlimited data

>Why not just use OneDrive, Google Drive and MEGA at the same time using rSync of im going to have to end up using them anyway?
Pricing. If I'd use cloudshit for my backups I'd be paying six figures per year. No that's not an exaggeration. Cloud is only an option if you have very low storage needs. Beyond even just 10-20TB (aka a single modern HDD) renting a server, colocating or using LTO storage services just isn't even a question compared to cloud shit.

Hm, I'll look into 3. Taking in consideration what >>103884198 I wasn't thinking of the pricing since I never paid for them in the past but that's because I usually only used them to back up things no bigger than 1gb so their free storages was sufficient enough.
Is backblaze one of the best ones? What do you >>103884198 use for your off-site backups?

Personally I'm well beyond anything considered normal scale so I invested the money into an LTO tape library for cold storage and also have offsite servers colocated in a datacenter. Full disclosure you are most definitely not going to need anything like this, especially not tape, the entry cost is (comparatively) extremely high and recovery from tape is slow, but tape itself is cheap so it only makes sense with absurd amounts of needed cold storage.
If you have only one machine (I think that was backblaze restriction on personal plans, only one machine per subscription?), i.e. a dedicated storage server / NAS / your main PC / whatever backblaze is definitely the best option pricing wise. If you want full control and don't mind a bit of work, buy a few 20TB (or whatever size you need) HDDs, put a full encrypted backup on each one and store one i.e. in a bank safe, another with your parents or a friend, do this with however many people you want. Regularly (once a quarter to once a year depending on your level of paranoia) check and update your offsite HDDs. Only once you get well beyond 100TB+ anything like what I'm doing makes any sense. Even with 100TB it's much cheaper (long term) to just buy 10x20TB HDDs and store them in pairs of five in offsite locations far away from your home.

Trying to figure out a way of expanding the storage on and old 1U server, that only has SFF drive bays in a way thats cost effective and reliable. All i've got so fat is: Either I try to find SFF SAS drives without having to mortgage my kidney and firstborn child, FIll it with SSDs and hope they don't all fail at once, or fioll it with shitty barracuda HDDs and hope they hold up to server workloads. Any better ideas?

personally i feel more confident in an encryption software the fewer updates it has without it being abandonware.
constant patches makes you question how secure the latest version is right now and while new features are nice it opens the door for new vulnerabilities due to technical debt.
bloating the code also makes less people bother to skim through it, and the more frequent the updates are the easier it is for a bad actor to sneak in something like a backdoor since each update gets less fanfare from the community.
(great, i see i wrote this just as the thread is about to 404)
