I got my gateron longjing tea switches today, will see how they hold up for a Cherry Brown enjoyer. They seem to be mostly like a brown, but the tactility is a touch higher up, a little stronger, and the housing is all-POM.
The bottom-out is 55g which is too light for me, but maybe I'll find it ok. I'll try it before committing to spring-swapping.
I'm not sure how I feel about all-POM housing, I think the switches I've tried with it were long pole and that may have been why I didn't like them. We'll see.

Tactile switch recommendations for a clicky switch enjoyer and buckling spring enthusiast that hates cherry browns? I'd like to set up a keychron q3 max to take with me, and it would be nice to make a little less noise for once (and maybe pursue the elusive "thockiness")

If you want less flex look for a keyboard with a steel or aluminum plate. I know Keychron Q series uses steel, since I have one, but maybe that's more expensive than you're looking for? A lot of companies have gone to soft/flexy boards because they're actually more comfortable to type on and they give the keyboard a lower-pitch sound.
>>103762118
You can pull it apart and look for damage, if you're lucky maybe the contacts just need to be cleaned, but good luck with fixing an ancient membrane board.

the problem is that having the keyboard be higher than it needs to be is terrible ergonomics-wise, and that using "regular" MX swiches and keycaps adds a lot to the height of the keyboard when compared to, say, kailh choc v1 with MBK keycaps.
picrel got it right as far as keywell boards go

I could agree with this if the keyboard was the only thing at my desk that I ever touched. I also like to carry my keyboard with me (and thus have to use it at arbitrary desks I can't adjust) though I admit that is an uncommon use case and it's okay to have a separate keyboard just for your desk

I currently use box jades but it gets slightly fatiguing when using them for hours of gaming. It seems like a bunch of people say that arctic foxes feel a bit nicer for long typing sessions with a lower peak force, but it's also 60 fucking cents a switch. Anyone here know if the 20gf difference makes a big difference or should I just say fuck it and solder some mushy linears on chink board.

Holy shit. That's actually a massive difference on the downstroke from the start of the press. Thanks, I guess the $50 might actually be worth in this case.
Maybe I also finally fork over the money for a hot swap keyboard at the same time. I managed to keep the mech purchases down to a single board all these years, but the last time I replaced the switches on this 96 key it took several hours.

20g is a huge difference. Even 10g is very noticeable in a blind test. 80g actuation force is a VERY stiff switch and you have a lot of options to go lighter without having to go linear.
>>103764304
Latency/performance difference is a meme. Optical theoretically solve the main point of failure with mechanical switches, but when everything is being built with per-key hotswap replaceable switches now it's no longer a big deal if you need to replace a key. It seemed like a better idea when people were throwing out entire keyboards when one key started to chatter because they didn't want to solder a new switch.
>>103764437
Plastic is fine, it's more about the overall experience and there are a variety of plastic boards that sound and type great these days.

Any microcontroller relatively isolated from vibrations will far outlast any analog switch. And for any non-flex PCB with the microcontroller on the main board the problem applies to all soldered components.

I don't know what the reasons are or even if its representative of overall experience, as i've said - anecdotally i surprisingly often encounter people with dead keebs with optical switches. My unhinged take is that there are deliberate design flaws causing this, since theres no point in making forever product. Another more grounded take - fancy switches come at a cost, and since budgets have to be met, QA instead of being traditionally underfunded formality cease to exist completely and that leads to higher failure rates.

They are quite a bit less tactile and a bit lighter on the bottom out. I like Arctic Foxes though, especially how they sound.
On a side note, I recently fucked around with swapping their clickbars with the one in the Box Pink (which is nearly as thick as the clickbar on Jades) and they didn't have much issues returning, clicks became slightly deeper too. I think I'm going to try swapping some longer slightly lighter springs into the Box Pinks instead though to see how that works, like 57.5/60g bottom out.
Also, mind you, if they aren't the Novelkeys versions of Jades with the PC top and white Nylon bottom housings I'm pretty sure they have a heavier bottom out as well, so that might be contributing to your fatigue as well.
It's a real shame though, Kailh basically just needs to make a swtich with the Box Pink's clickbar, but with a slightly lighter and much longer spring and it would probably be my go to "do it all" clicky switch. I also want to see them make a switch with a nylon top and bottom housing.
Gateron failed with the Melodics since they are still too tactile for extended use, and in general they have awful tolerances on the springs in most of their switches, especially for how fucking much they charge. Geon offers 0.3g tolerance springs for ~6 dollars for 110. There's no excuse to have 8/10g and sometimes even 15g tolerance on switches you charge more than $0.50 per 10, especially when they just spray lube/oil on them in the factory on the cheap. Every Gateron switch I've tried has felt mushy or just off in some way.
Clickiez also fail to be a good multi-purpose switch unless you rail your keyboard with your fingers.
These are seemingly good from what I've heard on these threads and elsewhere. Also have a 60g variant as well. Not the absolute cheapest I've seen, but ~30 cents per switch for 110 is not bad. Of course if you don't need that many then they immediately jump up to like ~40-45 cents per switch.

Budget: I'd like to keep it under $200
Location: USA
Preferred switch type: Red style switches, tactile but not clicky
Layout: ANSI
Form factor: 75%
Backlight: Shine-through, ideally using true white LEDs, but RGB is fine. Either way I also want it to be dimmable.
Previous/current keyboards: I currently have a Keychron V6 QMK with Keychron Silent K Pro Reds and am pretty pleased with it, but I'm thinking I'd like to get a 75% board for longer gaming sessions and use this keyboard with brown style switches for productivity stuff. I've been keeping my eyes on the Keychron Silent K Pro Browns, but they've been out of stock of the 110 count tubes this whole time. Do you guys have any idea if this is typical for Keychron and how often they restock things like switches? Is there a reasonably priced alternative that you'd recommend?

A lot of mechanical keyboard makers offer a HHKB-like layout known as 'Tsangan' although some still just call it HHKB, difference being that HHKB has an off-center 6.25U spacebar and Tsangan has a centered 7U spacebar. It has become pretty common and way cheaper than HHKB, though mechanical and not Topre of course.
>why doesn't someone like keychron just lift the design and make a cheaper version?
picrel is their cheaper version, Luminkey just ran a group buy of their own too

Each keycap feels like an artifact. They're thick, molded from ABS plastic - back then they didn’t cheap out with that thin, brittle crap you see on modern gaming monstrosities - and there's a reassuring density when you touch them. It’s like touching the cold surface of a stone tablet carved by some deranged prophet who predicted the internet but never got around to mentioning anything useful, like Wi-Fi. The legends on the keycaps aren’t lasered-on or painted, they’re double-shot injected. If you don’t know what that means, I won’t explain. Look it up. Educate yourself.
And the switches… Oh God, the switches. Buckling springs. Yes, those noisy, spring-loaded, life-affirming mechanisms that explode beneath your fingers with a thunderous clack. Not the quiet mush of modern-day chiclet keyboards that feel like you’re poking a dead fish. This is visceral, tactile feedback, a sensual dialogue between man and machine. Every keystroke echoes in my bones and reverberates in the empty, yawning chasm of my soul. When I type, it sounds like gunfire ricocheting in an abandoned parking garage.
The keyboard isn’t wireless. It requires a thick, coiled cable that snakes across my desk like a disgruntled anaconda. It’s hideous. Perfectly hideous. A celebration of unadulterated function over form, back when things were built to last, not to be replaced every two years. I run my fingers across it sometimes, not typing, just grazing the keys like I’m petting a corpse, and feel a kind of warmth that I can’t describe, but don’t want to admit I need. It makes me wonder if I’m capable of loving anything. Probably not. But if I could? This would be it.

>How do I know which keycaps would work on my keyboard?
You're usually fine for basically any set you find so long as it's the same layout.
>Is it possible to use ISO German caps onto a ANSI US layout?
Yes and no. Most of the keys would still work, but some of the other keys like Left Shift and Enter are different sizes and shapes, so they will just not fit onto an ANSI board properly.
For most expensive keycaps sets though I've noticed this usually isn't an issue though, as they offer ANSI and ISO keys. Just make sure to actually look at the images and stats they provide. Also make sure the spacebar is the same length as the one on your keyboard.

I would reccomend a lubed linear switch, or at least factory lubes. I recently put gateron sea salt smoothies into my board and they're basically a premium enthusiast experience for no effort.

generally, 7u is used as it uses the most layouts without adding more switch footprints to the PCB plus the symmetry is appealing. One 7u tsangan PCB can accommodate winkeyless, winkey/tsangan, and 7u hhkb top case layouts. Also, the "true" hhkb layout uses 6u not 6.25u.

Decent quality, hot-swappable if you decide to try new switches later, and more durable keycaps compared to the Logi MX Keys. Cheap office boards like Dell/HP can be fine, but they'll lack the consistency and feel you're probably looking for. Keychron might be a good middle ground.

Oh fuck me. I looked at their site earlier and i could have sworn the only 75% they had with shine through used low profile switches. I guess I somehow overlooked the K line of boards, though they don't use QMK. That said, they're sold out of the hot-swappable model so I'm still stuck wondering about when I could expect them to restock something.

Thanks, I'll think on it.

300, best if it works out of the box but I wouldn't mind playing lego as long as I don't have to assemble the springs and lube stuff myself.
No soldering or programming project please.
>Location
France
>Preferred switch type
Most importantly something on the silent end that doesn't click or ping and with no lateral looseness/rattle.
After that I prefer an early bump in force at the start of travel so the key resists then a drop, not a soft start linear push with a sharp bump in the middle of nowhere.
From what I could find, outside of the Asus Rog NX Browns, some Holy Pandas (Gateron X, Invyr, TTC v2), Alps SKCMs (brown, green) and Topre to a lesser extent, this force curve profile seems rather uncommon.
Rubber domes wouldn't offend me as long as the build quality is solid, but no chiclet banter please.
>Layout
First choice is ISO (FR)
Second choice (very far down) is JIS with an ubiquitous cap connector to custom order something like >>103795145, if having windows register that the "<>" key has moved from one side of the keyboard to the other when switching to azerty is not a massive and buggy ordeal. That doesn't narrow it down much. Maybe name a particular one.
MX switches can be broken down in the following ways:
>type
Linear
Tactile
- Holy Panda tactiles: the large bump starts at the top and goes all the way through the keystroke
- P-shaped tactiles: the medium-size bump starts at or close to the top but doesn't extend far
- MX Brown clones: the small bump happens closer to the middle of the keystroke and is meant to add subtle feel to the switch actuation; in use they can feel close to linear
Clicky
- Click jackets: these tend to feel a bit like mx browns, with a plasticky click
- Kailh box clickies: these have a metal click bar which produces a sharper click
- Click leaf switches: these have a click leaf which adds a lot of tactility and a very defined click to the keystroke
>weight
Usually measured in spring bottom-out force. Some examples:
45-50g: Gateron Red
60-65g: Holy Panda, Cherry Brown, Gateron Yellow, Cherry Red, Cherry Blue, Outemu Red
78g: Cherry Black
>stem shape
If the stem has a long pole, the pole will be the part that strikes the bottom housing, and this sounds and feels different. Some people like "long pole" switches, some don't.
>travel
A longer stem will hit the bottom earlier. 3mm of travel will feel like more of a shallow keystroke than 4mm (standard).
>pre-travel
The distance until actuation is usually 2mm or slightly shorter, but on "gaming" switches it can be as short as 0.9mm. This will cause more unintended inputs, but is slightly 'faster' for games. You probably don't need it.
>material
Noobs won't care about this as much but if you like the sound of Cherry nylon then you'll be picky about that. POM switches feel and sound different, as do polycarbonate switches, etc. And opaque black housing won't diffuse your RGB as much. Some things to consider.
>silencing
Dampening of the bottom-out and top-out to reduce the sound caused by using the switch. Usually feels mushy (with some rare exceptions)

Basically I'm wondering if there's anything out there that isn't a split keyboard that will let me add a trackball/trackpoint/analog stick for mouse control before I go to the effort of designing and making something myself.

I bought a chink keychron Q1 knockoff and chang apparently included a coiled aviator cable. As nice as it is to look at, I don't really see the appeal desu. I never really had an issue with cord length, so the detachable aspect seems a bit redundant when the board itself has female USB C port.

What are the chances it fucks up again? I've never spilled liquid on a mechanical keyboard before and I'm debating if I should just replace it to be safe or not since it is a 6 year old keyboard.

I think the Galaxy100 might be your best option, specifically the Epomaker version because it has VIA support. The main benefit here over a Keychron is that it has a metal case instead of a plastic one.
If you don't like the compressed layout then the Keychron V6 Max is the best option.

If he had a full sized keyboard then he wouldn't be able to sit like that, because he would have a numpad where his mouse currently is.
Clearly having a small keyboard is preferable for this guy, even if I wouldn't use that setup.

What is this retarded "reasoning" kek
small form-factortroons always wax lyrical about desk space and yet they do shit like this all the time, that's it. A numpad wouldn't displace anything there, and it wouldn't matter anyway because they'd still have their mouse smack dab kissing the side of their keyboard case like they are in that pic

I'm not going to waste my time defending a setup that I don't even like, so I'll just say that it's a fact that if he wants to keep his hands and shoulders squashed close together instead of spaced further out then he needs a small keyboard with the mouse right next to it, and this setup is clearly designed for that purpose.
The only other way to achieve this would be to use a keyboard with a left sided numpad, which is the ideal setup because right sided numpads are retarded.

Keyboards that small should certainly be classified as a mental illness, but at least it's one of the more healthy ones.

i want a full size keyboard with numpad and preferably media control keys like start/stop/skip/volume.

My pick would be the Womier SK75 or Bridge75. The Bridge75 has a ball-catch mechanism making it easier to dismantle, the SK75 sells alternative plates without flex cuts if you ever want to change things up in the future. Pick whatever of the two sounds or looks more interesting to you, you can't go wrong either way.
>>103827675
Maybe the Galaxy100? It's not perfect, main compromise is that it has a knob instead of dedicated media keys, but it has VIA so you can reprogram the knob and other keys to do all the functions you want.

You've got two decent options, the first is to get a QK100 kit, then buy yourself some Cherry Reds and whatever keycaps you like.
Second option is to just get a Keychron Q6, normally I'd say to get one of the cheaper Keychron keyboards but you're giving me $300 to spend here so I might as well go a bit higher.

I have Akko jelly pink switches (linear 45g) but some are starting to fail. I like linear, could go a bit heavier.
I remember seeing those MMD Princess switches a while ago, nice and cheap on AliEpxress. Are they still decent? Do they come pre-lubed? Any other good cheap switches I should try?
And what's a good cheap tactile switch as well, wouldn't mind trying them out too. But I've only really ever used Kailh browns or something (probably even worse) on a chinkboard from like 10 years ago. Not a fan of those.

Technically they did with MX whites, since the bit of lube they put in the switch is what made it a "soft" click. It's also why the click was so inconsistent.

I have an Anne Pro 2 in a really heavy Aluminum with Steel Plate enclosure. I really like it. However I've wanted a GMMK Pro TKL, but I'm not sure if I get a keyboard like that I'll actually like it better than what I already have.
I got lucky when I got this keyboard I bought it used off of ebay for about $40. Somebody spent a lot more on this keyboard than I did.
Pic isn't mine but it's like it.

Fuck, I forgot that Kailh Box switches have a much smaller clearance for spring diameter compared to other stems, so I can't use these ones I got from Geon some time ago.
Shit. Anyone know some longer springs (preferably in the 18-22mm range) with good tolerances that would fit some Box switches? In the 55-60g range. I see some listed "for Kailh, Gateron, etc." on Aliexpress, but they don't list anything besides the length and weighting, and others say they're ~4mm in diameter which is too wide. No weight tolerances listed at all either.

Quick impressions from a one key test of the Gateron Longjing Tea tactile:
- Noticeably more tactile than an MX brown, but still could be described as a light tactile with strong association of the bump to the actuation.
- Very little stem wobble compared to other brown-like switches I've tried
- POM housing gives it a more muted sound. Doesn't have the U-shaped nylon sound (deep and bassy and high and clacky at the same time), more of a condensed mid-range note. Some will perceive this as deeper-sounding.
- Tight fit in the plate. Having a very tight fit eliminates some undesirable hotswap sound.
- Feels comparable in heaviness to my Durock Light Tactiles even though its spring is lighter, probably because of the extra tactility. Could also be related to spring length...and I just confirmed this by opening one. It has a quite long two-stage spring and this has exactly the effect on perceived tactility and spring stiffness that you'd expect. It's possible the bump on the stem is close to an mx brown's and the tactility only feels stronger because of the spring.
- They feel adequately lubed and I don't hear any undesirable spring or leaf noises from the few I've tried.
Overall the first impressions are good, although I'm not sure that I like the POM sound. I'll probably try doing a full board with them to get a deeper impression.

Why would you film them if there's no stem wobble? That's probably why you didn't notice any improvement though.
I mean I guess testing if you can fit them is one thing, so I guess it's not that weird.

>Why would you film them if there's no stem wobble?
To tighten the fit between the housing pieces, which sometimes improves the sound. I don't know what stem wobble has to do with that, except that it's one sign that the switch might have loose tolerances in general.

Filming switches isn't done to fix stem wobble, it's to fix housing wobble. A side effect of eliminating housing wobble is also eliminating a rattly sound in the switch.

Cool, but what would even be the use case for this? Ergo boards should be paired with a standing desk anyway if you really wanna maximize that shit.
I also don't think much of them saying it helps with interrupting mental flow from "not moving your hands as much", that just sounds like bullshit. There's plenty of other technical tasks that involve moving your hands from one position to the next sporadically and I don't see people just sitting there going "DUHHHHHHHH" waiting to remember what it was they were doing/trying to accomplish, simply from moving their hands over a few inches.
Like watchmakers/repairmen reaching for a spring off to the side or something, or smaller electronics tinkering reaching for a pair of tweezers.

Gateron Longjing Tea update: I'm finding it very difficult to avoid accidental double-presses with these switches. Something to do with the actuation point and the bump, I don't know. But it's happening enough that I'm wondering if the switches are even usable. It's possible that this is being caused by some habit I developed using mx browns, and will resolve itself with more use. But it's not a good sign.
In many other ways the switch is good, and there's a lot good I could say about it. If someone wanted an mx brown that was a little more tactile and less clacky, which is lubed and has good tolerances and doesn't need any fussing, etc., this would be that switch. But the double inputs... I will continue using them for a while to see if the problem goes away with a little acclimation.

I tried opening one myself to see what you meant and it was strangely difficult, exactly as you said, but this seemed to be due to the design of the hooks, not because the housing fit was particularly snug. I was able to get a switch film in with ease. Without one I could feel a tiny bit of give when I tried to twist and wobble the housing. From that I'd say it's plausible that filming could improve Morandis, but I wasn't about to do the a/b comparisons to find out (they're usually so subtle that it might just be placebo anyway).

Neo's got a 65 and a 60 with full brass (or copper) bottom coming soon. Knowing them there should be a green option.
Daring Run has a 65 with some extra macro columns and a couple of buttons (?) and it comes in green. It's well under your budget. The in-stock sale starts soon but hasn't started yet. It's Daring Run so it won't be the best board ever. But I like my Flip 6p, in spite of everything...
Geon is prototyping a mini 40% version of the F1 722 right now, I think the GB starts later this year. I don't expect it'll come in green, but if you want a meme 40%...
Mode's keyboards all have green options as far as I'm aware, but it's a grayish sort of green.
MM Keyboards has the Class60 right now, but no green. It does come with a solenoid and buzzer though, so that's fun. It just barely makes it into the budget. They've only got white and navy at Keebsforall, idk if there are other vendors.
Speaking of Keebsforall they also still have a Yamanote Line Zoom65, that's the train themed one with some lime green accents on it and an IMO cool fluted design on the rear edge. Knob though
Another lime green board is the Dymium 65 at OrdinaryLabs, but it doesn't seem like a great deal. Fixed layout hotswap-only, knob, blocker... It wouldn't be my first choice
I looked around and that's the stuff I saw. We're in a bit of a drought right now.

I actually have to plug in my old membrane, where del works just fine
