Safety razors give the exact same shave as cartridge razors at a much lesser cost. It is also less intense on the skin. I personally just use normal shaving cream in a can though. No need to fag out with the brush and all that.

This is also something that matters. I use musgo real, a pea shaped bit of cream foamed up in a cup is enough for 3 passes on my face. I don't shave every day anymore, when I did in the military, a squeeze tube of it went by in 3 or 4 months. As a civilian shaving two or three times a week, it's about a year. You actually save money by buying the fancy creams to shave with, since you use much less compared to the globs you need to use of the cheap stuff. On top of that, your face won't feel like shit afterwards.
Ive never used any aftershaves, those face rub blocks, or any of that crap.

You won't get enough lather. A brush has multiple surface areas to lather the soap and fill air into it to create a fluffy foam. When you lather with your hand it will simply smear the shaving cream onto your face with a stick paste that will dry up pretty quickly compared to foam created by lathering with a brush.

Doing the DE thing for a while, then going back to a cartridge (I was traveling a lot for work and didn't want to risk losing my antique razors to an overzealous TSA agent) taught me something important:
The important thing is the prep work.

Learn the map of the grain of your whiskers. Learn how to whip up a good lather with high-quality soap. Multiple passes with minimal pressure. Learn proper skincare. Recognize when your skin is damaged and don't do a three-pass shave on those days.
If you're aware of all that stuff, you can get as perfect a shave with a cart as you can with a DE.

As for price, carts are more expensive, but also last a lot longer. If you're able to practice a little blade maintenance, you can make a Gillette Mach3 cart last around fifty shaves.

I'm mixed on how using a DE has been. With carts, just one pass is all I needed and I was smooth, but the DE needs multiple passes.

I also tried post-shaving balm and that shit feels like fire for the first 30 seconds to a minute. I use a good lather and just glide along, so my skin is either hating the new razor or hates the balm. I moisturize anyway, so maybe I don't even need the balm?

Around 5 shaves (give or take, depending on the brand). The first shave burns your skin because the blade is fresh. The next two are perfect. The fourth is a little irritating, and the fifth has you wondering why you're being cheap/lazy and trying to squeeze an extra shave out of a dead blade.
