It's an oldschool rule. If you follow "no brown in town" (in the city/office only black or colored leather, brown leather in the countryside) you might follow this rule as well. But it's 2024, nobody cares about any of these rules anymore anyway.

Do you work in the petroleum industry or something? Don't worry, a few dozen /tip/ posters refusing to buy garbage plastic clothing isn't going to put you out of a job. Now STFU about it.

Since my Bosie shetlands are way too long, I gambled and tried shrinking them. I turned them inside out and put them each in a delicates bag and washed them on the cold delicate cycle. I then dried them on the delicate cycle still in the bags. Worked out surprisingly well. They lost about two inches in length and had the unintended benefit of tightening up the neck hole a bit. Overall very pleased.

Effay approved jewlery vendors? I basically only know 3 categories:
- cheap fashion crap, which I never want to buy
- "luxury" fashion brands, pretty sure LV necklaces are not effay approved and I thankfully never fell for their trinkets
- the "classics" like the tiffany heart or the van cleef thing.
There probably is a 4th category of stuff that is solid but not overpaying for the brand name, I imagine?

I've been considering what I'd like to wear daily and arrive at a sort of daily uniform and it's really hard to beat t-shirts, no matter how much I try. Ideally, something with a higher neck or neck detail since it always looks much more dressed. I'm so disappointed. Buildings are too fucking hot everywhere and I'm sick of it.
>Shirts
Robust, stiff, not really a good option for a less average body shape, and I don't want MTM options. I was hoping I'd find a nice RTW like Drake's, but they really don't fit muscular proportions well at all unless I just accept the tight shoulders and large neck holes compared to chest sizes.
>Shetlands/Lambswool Sweaters
Robust, stretchy, almost perfect but too fucking hot thanks to every building in the 21st century being overheated.
>Knit Polos
Not robust, stretchy, but the only decent alternative to a shirt. Can't get something nice like Smedley since it can rip so easily, so looks like a life of sexcore tier merino shit. This is horrible.

I'm very tempted by a pair of Rancourt boots but I don't want to print something out to measure my foot with only to have it be wrong when they actually get to me 12 weeks from now. You couldn't even buy Oxfords or stitched belts in brown or cognac back in the day. Brown leather was exclusively for hiking boots and outdoorsy stuff.
Kind of bewildering how many people just see any suit at all and immediately think "business" and how recently things were different
It's not even a secret upper class code or something. Common people just knew this. But breaking with old rules and the casualization in apparel is so popular with everyone and every demographic like almost no other topic.
Imagine getting 95% of americans to agree on anything at all

Can anyone help me find jeans and chinos with a truly straight leg for guys with a bigger waist? I’ve gained some weight, okay a lot of weight, it sucks but I still want to look decent. I can’t wear sweatpants everywhere. Every “straight leg” I try ends up looking tapered or slim so my silhouette looks terrible. Recommend me some stuff with a straight or classic fit that is truly straight.

in my experience as long as the shoe is similar their sizing is similar.
also, the fancy measurement system exists because most people:
>can't figure out their actual shoe size (including width) and are either wearing a size too big or small
and
>most people only wear sneakers and have no idea what a dressier shoe should fit or what the size difference between a nike/adidas/converse to a quoddy-like brand
also, it's not fancy it's just a diy brannock device

I just watched Re-Animator and the main antagonist (or was he, I don’t know), Herbert West, for most of the film was wearing a pale blue or a white oxford shirt with a black narrow tie, black slacks and I suppose black oxfords with brown soles and I don’t know if the clothes were cut differently back then, or was everyone just slim back then, but there’s just something nonchalant and casual how he’s wearing it. Why is it that if I were to wear the same outfit I would look like a mormon but he looks very casual? Sorry for the poor image quality, it’s a screenshot from youtube.

Then again i ordered the most popular color of probably their most popular loafer so it's not that unrealistic that they would have some pairs around.

Looking for a wool hooded parka with smarter styling without the ubiquitous puffer look. Found this from Spier Mackay which looks great but I've never ordered from them before, I live in the UK. How is their sizing? I am normally S (5'8") in American brands (Ralph Lauren, Gant) but it might come up long.
Is the parka going to be as good as it looks? I am concerned about the breathability of the polyester lining, and whether it is going to make the synthetic rustle noise while moving in it. I will likely have to remove the faux fur for smarter wear.

>I don’t know if the clothes were cut differently back then, or was everyone just slim back then
Yes and yes. Do not buy anything labeled "slim-fit" even if you are slim. Most clothes today are made with less fabric to save money resulting in cuts that don't look aesthetically pleasing on the body. If you have an average build, you should generally be safe with clothes from J. Press and O'Connells. You'll also need pants with a mid to high rise if you are tucking your shirt in. Land's End Trad Fit chinos are my favorite option for casual pants.

I'm 5'7 and find their short-sized and XS jackets & coats to fit well. S is too long for me but maybe your extra inch would make it work. Lining shouldnt make rustling since its a different kind of fabric than noisy outer shells. But I probably wouldnt buy it if you just want to remove the fur. Maybe look if they have something similar without fur or try a duffle coat instead.

I have the same damn problem with sweaters. If you look at vintage ads a lot of time they were cut baggy in the chest but with shorter lengths and tighter hems, because they knew that was a more appealing shape. Not a potato sack over your torso.
I've heard Rubato is good and I like the look but they're too expensive for me honestly. I mainly have vintage sweaters and havent figured out a goto for new ones.

What's the deal with leather soles on shoes? I'm completely new at this and now that I've spent a bit on well fitting shoes, I'm wondering how bad it is for them to walk in the snow or rain. Am I just not supposed to wear these AT ALL if the sidewalk is wet? Will snow destroy them? Are we expected to just hover unless we are indoors when wearing leather soles? Not getting a "top" or whatever the hell, they look faggy as fuck and at that point I'd just get rubber soled shoes

Yes. For any wool sweater, you can wash it and then block it on a table and adjust to your size as it dries. I'm not a pro at this by any means, so it took me around 2 or 3 days of drying in my basement for each wool sweater. I don't have any fit pics, but just google stuff around these lines like "blocking" a sweater and you'll find good info.

After a couple days of walking on concrete they'll be roughed-up enough to have traction. Ive never had an issue walking on wet or snowy streets in dress shoes. The only time i feel rubber soles are necessary is if im hiking.

To be blunt, the statements seem to come from poorfags on the internet that cry if they scuff their $900 shoes, since they can't really afford them. I can't afford them either if I have to replace them every two or three years. A resole every 2 years seems fair, and I'd take that, but so far I'm led to believe that if you walk from your car to the office in leather soled Aldens, and there is snow outside, you'll tear through your shoes like butter and the sole will be gone in a few months, along with the entire shoe being irrecoverable. I'm not sure if the truth lies in between or close to one of these cases, but I just want more information so I can plan accordingly. If it is the case that rain or snow for a few minutes once a week will destroy these shoes, I'll have to buy an alternate pair with dainite soles for such weather.

Did you condition them when you purchased them? Unless its shell, I've never had a pair of leather shoes that did not require conditioning. Sperry is the worst offender, you buy shoes that are dried out and will start getting cracks all over if you don't immediately condition them. I use them for just fucking around and super casual wear, so I just slather them in obenaufs oil.

Not him but rancourt used horween chromexel leather, or did until very recently that stuff does NOT need conditioning out of the box it's fucking pumped full of oil during the tanning process.
The break in is rough because they are Goodyear welted loafers sitting on a big thick piece of veg tan leather.
Blake stiched loafers break in much faster and are softer out of the box, especially if they have a thinner rubber midsole and a rubber sole.
Goodyear welted loafers having a somewhat rough break in period is just kinda the nature of the beast. That's why many brands blake stich theirs instead
Not him but rancourt used horween chromexel leather, or did until very recently that stuff does NOT need conditioning out of the box it's fucking pumped full of oil during the tanning process.

>Goodyear welted loafers having a somewhat rough break in period is just kinda the nature of the beast
I have a few Aldens and redwings. There is a break-in, but calling it "rough" is such a pussy thing to say. Just wear your shoes, human feet are not made out of gelatin. Redditors legit made me nervous when buying my first Goodyear welted iron rangers, and they were easier to break in than the cheap bates boots from boot camp. Faggots were actually posting about them crying from the sores and bruises on their feet, just utterly insane and pathetic.

Similar question to >>18350657, except instead of being fat i'm /fit/ and a midget and my measurements are retarded. I wear a 33x29 in Levis, and that's only because they don't make a 27 or 28 inch inseam for adult men. I need a pair of trousers for a wedding coming up in March; I've tried off-the-rack, made-to-measure at Nordstroms, etc., and everything always fits way too tightly in the seat.
Does anyone make menswear for little mutants like me? What's even flattering on a blocky 5'8" refrigerator build like mine?
I started looking at suitsupply; it looks like their wide-leg pant might be a good option, possibly with some tailoring to taper the lower leg a little. I'd had success with the fit of picrelated wranglers, but they're cheapo polyester and feel a little juvenile. thanks in advance anons

Do any anons have experience with Kamakura’s blazers? Half my jackets are 40R, and the other half are 38R. Their size chart isn’t very descriptive, but from what I can make out they suggest a 38(M). Can anyone else confirm?
Picrel is their “crazy madras” one that I’m interested in.

Husbands Paris makes horsebit loafers with a 1 3/8" heel. Expensive but at least you know somebody makes them
>>18351731
True. Some of their models have a fat 5cm hem which you can let out and leave 1cm. Leaves an ugly light line at the original hem though. All this and it's barely a no-break pant for me. Not a brand for tall&skinny people.

I dont have any good boots so i wore longwing oxfords which are really effective, feet didnt get wet even after trudging through high mounds of snow. The only problem was my face getting hit by snow in the wind, i need some kind of face covering.

Their sizes are weird because they use alpha sizing but do map to normal jacket sizing. I have their grey herringbone Blazer. I usually wear 40r too, but bought both their M (38) and L (40) to try. The large was much too baggy, shoulders too big, etc. Not in a good, relaxed way. The medium fits really well, but I would prefer it being slightly longer as it doesn't quite cover my ass. It's probably closer to a 40s than a 38r. Weirdly, when I first told them my measurements, they suggested XL, not sure what that was about. Anyway, I would suggest trying the medium unless you are okay buying both and returning one.

Just get the size they recommend. Are you trying to get a slim fit out of vintage ivy/kamakura classics? Their paints have to be worn at the actual waist just under your bellybutton, and unstructured jackets have some drape. Just look at the model picture and go by that. All of their items have extensive measurements for each section, just verify on something that already fits well.
I will say, unless you have the frame of a Jomon Japanese man, most things will fit poorly on you. No room for Yayois.
Parachute cloth shirts are banger as well, can tell they're going to be nearly indestructible. I might pick some more up soon, can wear them without sweaters and just a blazer on top when it's 20F outside.

i'm 5'3. this problem is the bane of my existence. you're going to have to get your pants tailored, hemmed, or buy a sewing machine. the last option would definitely be the cheapest and it would be a good hobby to pick up given the fact that it'll probably be difficult to find dress shirts that fit you either. i went to a korean guy recently to get my pants hemmed, i spent about 36$ but i have the feeling they're still going to be baggy around the legs. i have a pair of 32x28 ralph lauren pants coming in that i bought on ebay for a very reasonable price, about 20$, hopefully they fit. ebay a good place to find cheap pants from expensive brands with a short inseam. you'll also find that some pants are 33x29 but they'll fit like a 27 or 28.

They don't make clothes for you. I wear their large jackets and I'm 5'8". Their large is about the same as my older JPress 41R.
I'm fairly confident their sizing caps out at ~5'9" in height.
I'm 182lbs ~42" chest measurement and 36" hip (32" smallest ever when I was at ~12% bf), and their pants LARGEST size is W36 and they sell true to size, so I doubt anyone on this thread that isn't sub 5'8" can even wear their pants unless they're skeleton mode, at which case they'd top out at ~5'10" skelly as their largest inseam offered is 32"
If you're tall, their shirts really don't get much longer. I wear their size 16 shirts following their measurement guides, and they are 6 buttons with the last button right on my bellybutton, meaning even at my height I need higher waisted pants, which I've done by buying pants exclusively from them. I hear its a bit better with the NY fit shirts but those also cap out around 6' height.
I love Kamakura and their quality and fit is unmatched at that price point, but it's really made for shorter guys and I wouldn't recommend it for taller guys who unfortunately have to pay more for the quality, the likes of drakes or Jpress.

If you're too misshaped for made-to-measure you're last option is to go to an actual tailor
Also, are you sure? I'm a real thincel and don't even wear a 40cm waist at waist-height, not even hip-height. If you chose double pleats it's as if the thighs had a few cm more

I tend to look forward in time and I genuinely feel like it’s already over. With large pants it’s so easy to cross that line between cool and cringe, that the trend itself was doomed to die quickly, given the urge people and brands in general have to exaggerate everything. There are trends that remain cool even if they’re interpreted and carried out in exaggerated ways, others that die as soon as you project them under a ridiculous light.

More Kamakura in the mail. I've had their brown corduroy French chore jacket for a few months. I just received a blue corduroy blazer, but I've noticed that the material does not have the Brisbane Moss tag indicating the source of their material.
Likewise, I've had their gray ivy tweed blazer for a long while, which has an Abraham Moon tag for indicating the source of tweed, while the newly received brown version of the blazer has no such tags.
Contrary to what I initially assumed, it seems the materials with no source indication are higher quality than the UK branded ones. The stitching is also higher quality. This might explain why the French chore jacket and gray ivy tweed blazer I've owned for a while were on sale this last Black Friday, while the blue corduroy blazer and the brown ivy blazer were not on sale. I had waited for a long time and was disappointed I could not pick them up then. I couldn't wait any longer and just ordered them at full price a few days ago. I'm STILL waiting for the size 16 ecru OCBD's to come back in stock, and I regret not ordering more months ago.

You either want to match the tone or contrast with it enough. Avoid wearing shoes that are roughly similar but not the same shade. I like wearing sand wallabees with dark brown pants because they contrast. But usually i just wear dark brown loafers or wingtips. Also sneakers if its a more casual outfit.

I wish they made the undarted corduroy blazer in the same brown as the chore jacket. That brown shade seems hard to find in corduroy blazers.
I don't think the quality of the products you mentioned are why they are on sale, they're just older. The brown tweed jacket is one season newer than the grey one.
That's interesting about the quality though, I have the grey one too, so I was hesitant to get the brown when I saw the tweed source wasn't listed, but now I'm definitely reconsidering. I doubt the stitching quality difference you mentioned is related though, they're the same pattern and probably made in the same factory, so maybe just inconsistency in general.

Yeah looking at them more closely, its just hard to see the double shoulder stitching on the gray one, while its more pronounced on the brown tweed as its denser.
So I mean, the quality could also be a matter of opinion. The gray Abraham moon tweed is more relaxed and drapes well, with zero resistance on movement. The brown tweed is more usual, the kind of thing you'd see from JPress.
As for the corduroy, I wear the chore jacket (now discontinued apparently?) the same way I would a blazer. Corduroy blazer is just a pretty much a V-neck chore jacket if you really think about it.

Baggy fit in the chest is fine. Good even, it's the classic style. The neck looks like it fits well. Shoulders might be slightly too wide. Sleeves might be a tiny bit too long which excacerbates the wrinkling in the arms. But it'd look at least a bit better if you ironed it.
Also that belt is way too big proportionally and unfittingly casual for a white shirt & black pants.

Does anyone have advice for wearing suit separates? I have an ugly slim black polyester suit from high school, and I'm in college. That's what I wear to career fairs. It's fairly casual where I am and although a suit makes for a good appearance, I don't like the one I have much, and a good new suit that fits me is kind of out of my budget at the moment unless I get lucky.
So, I'm considering going down a level in formality in exchange for something that fits and looks better. I'd like to wear dress pants and a suit jacket/sport coat/blazer rather than the black suit.
Can anyone give me any pointers? When I was looking at suits I wanted something in some shade of grey instead of black and with a bit of texture to it instead of the flat black of my current suit. Also something that would look good with oxford shirts instead of just dress shirts. Any help is appreciated

Brown double-breasted hopsack blazer, even browner merino polo neck, coat is decidedly not camel and domestic estate sale smell quality, navy trousers, wool felt fedora, silk scarf, rustic Norwegian split-toe grain calf goretex layered thick commando sole frankenshoes.
Lift pic. I went to the corner store. Bought 8 litres of orange juice, all the sugar left and raisins for flavouring to make the dirt poor student special for next weekend. Also picked up 10 cans of the cheapest kind of lager and Swedish nicotine pouches. My store reputation is now down the gutter as if I had any left after accidentally pinching a cup of coffee last week. It was black so it figures. Ugly face and chink phone cebsored for your viewing pleasure. This is decadence.

How should I consider the colour of an overcoat or trench coat compared with the colour of the suit
Would a tan one work with everything? Is this something I should consider? or should I ideally have like 3 coats (tan, black, navy)?

I have been with my gf for 13 years and I have never bought her any clothing. I would never. Not even just because I might get her something she doesn't like, I just think it's presumptuous.

I am looking for classic oxford shoes, but I have a wider foot. looking at british brands I found that their lasts are not really made for me, and I need to use an 11 or 11.5 when my actual shoe size should be 9.5
what brand would you recommend in this situation?

heh. I have this as well, but I'm really into coffee. For a ton of other /tip/ things that I do without consulting this thread or other resources, is simply by doing things or purchasing objects as if I were a Japanese man.

Not unless you buy used. Lucky I never had to deal with this, inherited a chest of antartex, j press, and some other weird dead brand sweaters from my grampappy. I copied his clothing style as well, but not a huge fan of most of his OCBD's, the collars are too big and so are the armholes.

Can someone please help me with what to together the most basic simply outfit for a "cocktail" event tomorrow night? I have time to go shop during the day I am seriously going to cry I'm so overwhelmed by fashion and I struggle to know what to style.
I think its just like dark chino and button down shirt, no tie, but I look at amazon and my mind just goes blank trying to imagine myself in outfits
I'm sorry if this is the wrong thread I can fuck off if you tell me but the people in the OP image seemed like its close to what I'm imagining it should look like and I'm panicking

Shetland woolen co is the same manufacturer that makes shaggy dogs, they make $140 brushed shetlands that are machine knit instead of hand frame knit.
https://shetlandwoollen.co/collections/brushed-jumpers-1/products/haerie-shetland-brushed-jumper-1
They also make Peter Blance brand sweaters which are only sold in Japan for about $200 that are hand fram knit and essentially identical to shaggy dogs but with an inch shorter torso and maybe a touch slimmer cut.
They also make the brushed Shetlands that O'connel's sells, also hand frame knit, which are a touch over $200. I think $210 or $220

your boss is probably only wearing button-downs when it's warm and wants to go top button unbuttoned

Eh, tradition feels is a big part of it, hand framed sweaters will have more stich variation and irregularities. Machine knit will be more uniform. I don't think there will be much difference in terms or give or stretchiness or anything like that.
