Fruitcake got a bad reputation when comedians started making jokes about them in the 80s and since they all stole material from each other, the public got a steady diet of fruitcake hate. It also didn't help that it was a time where lots of traditional home baking was going out of style so most people only had mass produced fruitcake. The mass produced stuff isn't terrible, it's just not as good as what you can make at home.

When I discovered my love of fruitcake, I searched for why it has such a bad reputation. I remember reading something that said there was apparently a craze of getting mail-ordered fruitcakes for a few years in like the early or mid 20th century.
