Are humans really supposed to be social animals? At this point I just feel like that's a fucking meme.
>a large portion of society nowadays is introverted, suffers from social anxiety and would rather not converse with other people
>siblings grow up together -and they constantly fight and hate each other, and they only get along once they grow up and separate from each other
>married couples have a 50% chance of breaking up, and a lot of the ones that don't probably aren't willing to do it just because they don't want to go through a divorce, so they just remain miserable while continuing to live with someone they can no stand

You're a social animal because you can't survive without other people.
Whether you're happy about that or not has nothing to do with you being a social animal. How you feel has no effect on reality.

What are you comparing humans to?
I don't know how many other animals can you find that choose to live in groups of 1 million+?

We're pack animals, like dogs. There are alphas and betas and so one. Cats are social animals and don't really have hierarchy, which is why they fucking fight and yowl with/at each other all the damn time

There are lots of people but no communities. The nuclear family model also makes it so that nobody mediates between husband and wife, they are alone with all their conflicts.

Bad outdated argument from 2006.
Even the homeless have iphones in America now. I wish I could live a life without using a smartphone or the internet but it's become unrealistic in the place and times I live in without adopting an antisocial survival hermit lifestyle.
Pre-internet society worked fine because everyone was pre-internet. Being disconnected in the current year is being socially and financially crippled. Things that could have been accomplished on paper 20 years ago now require an app, phone number, and acceptable digital footprint.
Truthfully I do fantasize about the hermit Ted lifestyle, but I'm a social creature and want a community and support structure.

You gotta understand that "social animals" doesn't mean millions of people. Humans didn't live in groups of millions for 99.99% of existence.

That's still social compared to animals that want to live their entire adult lives without seeing a member of their species except to mate. The fact that we organize communities and social structures makes us social even if we don't want to chat with our neighbor.

You kinda answered your own question with the way you described how things are nowadays. The increasing atomization plus all of the internet and social media garbage clearly isn't good for people and causes mental distress. It doesn't change the fact that you would propably lose your mind if you were completely alone on some secluded island without any contact to other people (and this includes anything written, any videos or podcasts or audibooks or whatever)
