>cat has stomach cancer, doc unsure how progressed
>throws up on my floor every morning

>cerenia does nothing even at higher doses
>CBD oil does nothing
>very low appetite even while being spoiled by gerber baby food
>down from 8lbs to 7.6lbs in a month
>doc says next treatment options would be extremely intense vet treatments which she hates which would give me a little bit of time, not a lot
But she's also... okay? She sleeps on my bed all the time like usual, she's snuggly. She chirps at me, loves on me, wants to snooze away in my lap. I can't emotionally justify ending her one and only precious life when she's not visibly suffering but I know she'll get worse the longer this goes on.

That's pretty much what we do with our cats whenever we go on vacation. The dog stays over with someone but we just get someone to check in on the cats. She's great about it - always stops to make sure they're fed, sends pictures to make sure they're all accounted for, and stops to play with them if they're feeling social enough. I worry about the same thing - mine fusses at me every night to come to bed so he can cuddle, but whenever we get home from vacation he slips back into the routine pretty quick. If anything it's maybe a day of sulking and then he wants to cuddle more to make up for it.

>1 year 2 month cat refuses to play by himself
>only plays with stick toys
>has been getting increasingly picky and will only play with very specific bird/mouse/feather attachment
>now starting to get bored of those, wanders back to toy cupboard during play even though he doesn't pick anything out if I open it back up
>will stop playing after barely ten minutes, then 30 mins later try to lead me back to the toy cupboard
Any suggestions? He has zero interests in balls or any stationary free play mice or other type of toys and will only very ocassionally attack his kicker toys. I've tried loads of lures and these are the only ones he would really go crazy for, but now even that interest is waning and he's not running around and leaping for them like he used to. I've ordered the cat dancer and will get more puzzle feeders (have two right now), but I'm running out of toy options. I ordered some of the ones from the recent Jackson Galaxy video like the touch activated bird but he tapped it a few times the first night and hasn't shown interest in it since. He gets guaranteed play three times a day before meals, has cat trees, and there's no behavioural issues. Just don't want him getting bored and fat.

Cats are domesticated so they are no longer solitary predators. First, domesticated cats are more social. You really need two cats. Second, most cats have lower prey drive especially for rodents because originally the wild ones preferred bugs and birds anyways, so with domestication they seem to lean even further towards a preference for flying shit if their prey drive is so low that ground scurrying things barely register.

I thought about that for my young cat (1yo) who gets very antsy if I don't play with her on a constant basis. However my apartment is too small and I wouldn't have any place to fit a second litterbox without putting it in my living room or bedroom

Honestly, sometimes low tech works. A plastic straw or those little rings around milk jugs were the favorite toy of a couple of our cats. Granted, we had to stop with the straws because we didn't want them chewing on them and ingesting plastic, but the rings they never really chewed on, but they loved playing floor hockey with them. It was literally the only toy our one cat would go out of his way to play with without provocation.

Aside from that, idk, it's a tough life for a sedentary cat.

Use a shock collar set on vibrate or the lowest setting. When they get shocked act sympathetic and provide them a scratching post. Reward them for using it.

Worked for me. Cats are mesopredators so they are naturally submissive to and accepting of their mistakes. Do not use this on higher predators like dogs and wild cats, it makes them more aggressive.

I mean, he's already over a year old. At what age do cats become more affectionate? Right now it seems like he's nothing more than a drain on resources that offers nothing in return...no affection, no play, nothing. He doesn't sleep by us, doesn't do much of anything with us, really. He's usually off by himself if he's not meowing and running away.

Not making a contest here, I'm just saying I know what it's like to lose a kitty way before their time. You can never take anyone's health for granted, especially pets it seems.

A cougar ate my neighbor's outdoor cat a few days ago and it broke my heart. The sweetest, friendliest cat ever, used to come over all the time for treats and cuddling. He only lived a couple houses down so he'd just hop the backyard fences, we always thought he was safe as far as outdoor cats go since he was never near the road and always in a safe yard but I guess it didn't matter since this thing was waiting for him in all the bushes at his owner's massive yard. I miss seeing him in my backyard every day.

No where, no time, is ever safe for an outdoor cat. They are nearer the bottom of the food chain than most animals. The friendlier the lower. Even golden retrievers have eaten them. Even wimpy birds with hollow bones eat or critically injure them. I am sure some lived full lives but the average is drawn down by all the others that died much sooner or got a horrible disease.

We keep trying to tell people that they're setting their cats up to die horribly and they go "lol no, you must hate cats, how dare you deny that my cat is the supremest of animal gentlemen, he would kick any dogs ass, coyotes fear cats. cats hunt, lesser animals scavenge. cats own the land, can*ds and b*rds take the scraps! cats are dominant. apex predator of the concrete jungle."
And then their cats die and they get another cat to throw into the battle royale. For probably the fifth time. Cue the "warriors death, he live free he die free" cope!

Even worse are the anti-neuter nutters. Intact cats make 20+ kittens a year and those kittens have an 80% mortality rate.
>Neutering? Why do you hate cats?

That's basically the conclusion I finally came to, yeah. Literally a 15 minute window between being seen alive by a neighbor and disappearing without a trace on his own property.

I'm not a cat owner and don't know if I ever will be due to allergies + small confined house with no litterbox space so I appreciate outdoor neighborhood cats coming to visit for my own selfish reasons, but it really does suck forming any kind of connection with an animal like that who, like you said, is pretty much guaranteed an unhappy ending.

>almost never lets people pet him
>bites randomly when he does allow someone to pet him
>runs away from literally everyone in the house
>hides upstairs by himself and meows loud enough to be heard throughout the whole house
>doesn't play no matter who's trying or how long they try
>doesn't even lay down next to anyone for more than a few seconds
We've had him since he was a kitten, nearly a year and a half, so it's not a matter of him getting used to us. He's just a retarded asshole. Probably gonna take him to a shelter.

It's foolish to attribute fully human emotions and motivations onto animals but it's just as stupid to assume there's nothing even comparable, even on a basic level. Animals can feel stress, and they can seek out things that reduce that stress. You can assume they find such things comforting. I can say from experience that there have been and currently are a handful of cats in my life who do not primarily receive their food from me, or in one case ANY food. But they regularly seek out my company for one reason or another. Even if it's just because I'm really good at scratching chins, that still means they want to be around me even if it's for a brief interaction. I don't care if they "love" me. They want to be around me, and I like having them around me. I feel content knowing that my cat, who usually spends his time sleeping in some unused back room of the house, comes to sleep on my bed behind me when I come home. Is it "love"? I don't know. But I'm the only human in the house he gives a damn about most of the time. He could get heat from someone else, like the person who's actually home all day. I'm not the one who feeds them. Still he seeks out my company. Still he comes to sit in my bed with me until I fall asleep, at which point he goes to sleep in my chair for a while.

I can't claim to understand his emotions, but I believe he has some form of them.

Is he a single child? I've been starting to wonder lately if the optimal situation isn't to adopt two kittens together at a time to ensure they learn to socialize properly. I gave my sister a little shivering fuzzball that showed up behind our office building and she's grown into a moody diva. Apparently my sister made a cat-shaped pillow with a picture of the cat printed on it and the bratty little gremlin can't stand it. She says the face on the picture is a mad-looking face, because the cat has resting bitch face to begin with, but she says the cat gets mad back at the picture of her own fucking face.

tldr i worry that single cats grow up more retarded than most.

Yes, but we do have a beagle mix that is very very friendly who tries to play with the retard to no avail. I know a dog isn't a cat, but still. Also, seems odd that this would only have become an issue in the last few months when we've had both animals for well over a year
Anonymous 01/10/25(Fri)20:42:09 No.4931904
>>4931896
Yeah but I think there might be something special about them growing up with others of their own species. I could be completely off base anyway, though. At the end of the day animals tend to be almost as varied as humans. I'm not claiming they're intelligent or whatever, I'm not trying to project, I just mean each animal is different. Either way I can only go off personal anecdotes. My sister also has a very friendly hound mix who's fairly playful and sweet as can be, but their cat doesn't care much for it either despite growing up in a house that the dog was already living in.

By contrast, we had a couple of kittens years ago we got fairly close to one another, and they would play together all the time, and were very affectionate to us. Our dog at the time was very abrasive and curmudgeonly, but whenever she'd go run up and bark at the one of them he'd just roll over and look at her. That cat loved that fucking dog.
He was never quite as cuddly as his brother, and was even less so when his brother died young. But he'd follow that sour old dog around, sleep in the bed with her, curl up on her tail, ran up behind her to see what was going on if she was barking at something, etc.
But whatever, I hope you figure something out, anon. It may just be a situation where you need to find it a new home, honestly. Maybe it'd be happier with someone else. It's hard to say.

I took my senior cat to the vet for an unrelated and I thought minor issue and on the exam the vet thought she might have intestinal cancer. Blood tests were done and they want to be x-rays and ultrasounds later. If it is cancer she would have less than year.

I don't know if I can handle it. She is the most sweetest little cat in the world and already went through so much shit in her life. Her first owners threw her out into a midwest deep freeze when they moved, my grandma took her in and then passed away two years later, then my mom took her in where she was close with mom before mom passed away. The available cat trackers I've found are always crazy expensive, unreliable, or far too big for a cat.
Is there anything you've tried, that you're at least 90% happy with?

My girl disappeared last week. I feel like a fucking asshole. I'd bought her a new collar a few days before she ran off, and forgot to replace the air tag that she'd been wearing.
The moment she gets home, I'm locking her inside. I don't care that she'd an outdoor cat. She's not allowed to leave until she's got a fucking tracker.

I'm sure we will.
How long should I keep him away in my room from my other cat? She's 3 months older than him

That's the only method I found that worked too. Had an old cat that took a tiny half pill every day for a while. He got used to it quickly enough.

It was like $7. And yes, the springs are magical. If you haven't I suggest trying them.

Same here. His favorite game is to play hockey with them until they disappear under an appliance forever.

Give it alcohol or peer pressure it into being less of a bitch.

This is Leo, i picked him up from animal control today. I figure my Princess might want a friend to keep her company since me and the gf work alot. He appears to be Bengal, hes got the spots n stripes.

So far hes been all over the house, meowing his head off, getting a couple drinks from the toilet, and trying to find a hiding place.

Princess is not amused, shes been growling and hissing but they havent duked it out yet.

I heard a cat crying at my neighbors on Saturday so I pspsps'd and he came running over the fence and rubbed up on me.
I brought him inside because of the cold this week and he's been a very easy guest but I don't know if I want to keep him long term. I had to put down my sick cat in June and I don't think I'm ready for another pet on top of life schedule/commitment.

So what the hell do I do with this thing?
I need to get a cat carrier so I can take him to a vet to check for a chip first off, but I really don't think there will be one since he's not neutered yet. I've been checking PetFBI and nobody has posted for him.
I haven't looked too closely but it seems most of the reputable shelters are only taking pregnant cats and kittens or if they're injured.

Sounds like another cat found you. I found my cat randomly and ended up keeping her. She probably would have died by dog if I hadn't saved her as well.

She bothers the hell out of me fairly often, but I'm happy I have her. She kinda bullies my dog, but I think they secretly like each other.

Skin
Hey I recently discovered my female cat's hind legs, both of them at the back of her back-legs, have developed this crusty feeling thing and when I shaved a bit of fur to see I noticed it's actually gotten red and bumpy. I didn't know what it was and looked into it and the internet said anything from Cancerous tumors to just dermatitis or allergic reaction.
I've changed the litter, her food, and now I'm throwing out a new carpet since I don't know when this started. I think it was somewhat recent, but I'm not sure.

I think it may be some sort of skin related thing because she doesn't have it anywhere else on her body. Just the back of her hind legs. It kind of looks like pic related.
What else shoulCd I do? I took a Q-tip and dabbed a bit of chloraxeadine solution on it to dab on the 'wound' a bit.

We live a little too far away from the city and can't take her until next week at the earliest. Gotta find a way to deal with it on my own at least before then.

Just dropped my cat off at the vet to get x-rays and ultrasounds to look for cancer. She's 14 and I was told it's more likely than not she does. She's the sweetest thing ever and I hate she has to go through all of this.
