Mouse issue

I recently moved to an old house, which I will be significantly renovating, so it's currently totally cluttered with building materials and my stuff I brought. It's been completely overrun by mice.
It started weeks ago with just a few mice, I kept catching and throwing them out, but the were coming back, or new ones kept coming. I didn't want to use poison, because when one died it took me days to find while I couldn't stand the smell and I also watched a mouse who ate too little poison dying for hours. they unsurprisingly reproduced and now there's a shitload of small mice running around and droppings everywhere, I suspect that now there's probably almost 20 of mice total and I'm losing my mind. I now finally managed to find and close up the probable openings they used and I'm wondering what to do with them. I'd like to avoid killing them if possible, because the small ones are very trusting and even try to huddle up to me if I sit still (I know they're just vermin and I'm being retarded, but still), but throwing them out at this point is probably a bad death sentence anyway.
I wonder if it's feasible to keep them in a huge cage throughout the winter, but I suspect they'll suffer in captivity and it'd be more humane to kill them. if so, what's the best way to do it to ensure they won't decompose in various nooks?

The best way to kill any small animal is to smash them with a brick, as this destroys their brains isntantly and as such, they feel no pain. It is, however, extremely messy and gross.

Either a predator (eg barn cat) or some type of bucket mouse trap (home made or store bought) which have the capacity to catch many mice quickly. I'd go with some strategically placed bucket traps

cats have never killed rodents at a sufficient rate to eliminate them, reduce their numbers, or even stall population growth
they actually make the situation worse. they attract more rodents, and add their own shit and piss to the pile (along with the odd half-eaten decaying carcass). if you are a business, it is illegal for you to employ a "ratting cat" as pest control. it is universally recognized as the complete opposite of effective.
please stop condemning cats to being poorly socialized, half starved, and forced to subsist on a perpetually growing supply of diseased rodent meat (most of the rodents cats do catch are young, sick, and/or injured). just own a cat because you like cats, feed them real food, and get rid of your mice with bucket traps and colony traps.

It's just an example of how bad cats are as pest control.
They have evolved for millions of years to live a decade and a half in a pretty small territory. They would be really shitty animals if they exterminated half of the diet. They actually attract additional rodents to ensure a steady supply of food even if more effective predators like canids and avians pass through. In case you ever wondered why your cat loves killing things, and forgetting to eat the whole thing even if they were hungry. The rotting flesh attracts additional prey.

It's the great injustice of the world; they'd be so easy to live with if we could just communicate, come to an understanding, go 'hey you're cute and I'll straight feed you if you'd just stop chewing open my doritos and shitting in the cutlery'
But you can't do that, and they're not gonna stop. So just buy a couple of these, bait them with peanut butter, and do what needs to be done. Bucket traps are the answer for big open outbuildings with hundreds of 'em to go through, but with just twenty, break their spines and be done with it.

I avoided most of the damage by giving them some food once there was a lot of them and throwing around some hay and several straw chew toys for rodents (without that they tried to chew on cables and soft plastics, like polystyrene, or sand paper), but the droppings are the real nightmare.

I post this a lot here, your question is best suited to the stupid question thread on >>>/diy/
Along with the advice above, check how they get in. You need to walk around the outside of the house sealing up any crack or hole they can get in.
Then you can deal with 50+ that are in there, there's always more than you can see.

I know, I saw 5 at the same time at most when I placed some food during their foraging time (they aren't scared at all if I don't do any sudden movements) that's why I estimated them at around 20.

my cats performed a little mousy c-section/abortion once. found a damn mouse fetus on my floor one morning. disgusting. I probably would have thought they had just found a nest if I didn't also find the mother with its guys ripped open.

>They already live in the big cage you call a house, as long as you provide them with enough stimulation, food, and space I don't see why they'd suffer worse in captivity.
I could get them tunnels, hamster wheels, hanging ropes for climbing and those towers for rodents that can be filled with something like sawdust they can dig through.
are there any size guidelines per mouse, or something like that? the biggest rodent cage I saw was around 100x60x60cm (40x25x25inches), with additional platform making several stories. would it be enough for up to 20 mice? some will probably fight all the time and kill each other off, but they're currently doing it in the house anyway

this. once you have invited mice into your house, you might hesitate to talk, cause..you dont want to sound lunatic lol.
but if you do it with an action, where its basically the mouses fault to follow the bait, then yea, you are not repsonsible and the mouse is kill. especially the bucket trap is effectivve, cause mouse would assume, there is no dead rodent inside. and if mouse turns away from the bait you can tell your homies, that you really just offered a bucket, so you are not showing animal cruelty.
ingenious.

you just find highly motivated scavengers more relatable and easy to figure out because they are always working

my excuse is that I was a child but I decided to hit one with a slingshot and succeeded. the poor mouse spat out all sorts of organs and then tried to get away, luckily our dog, probably frustrated by the on-going lack of success in catching mice, jumped into the fray and swiftly euthanized the rodent.

Easy. Get a Jack Russell. They are pound for pound the most efficient and deadly terriers.

blurry 2 cute rattos for now, will post a better pic later
I had to makeshift put a metal mesh over the bars, because they kept getting through it easily, even though the cage was supposed to be suitable for small rodents, and the smallest ones now they insist on sleeping on it, usually huddling into one big pile, instead in one of the small mouse huts I put there
I hope them e.g. using the hamster wheel constantly means they aren't suffering or anything, but many are still bitting the bars

quickly. I hang out ouside the cage for some time then scratch the mesh a bit next to the climbers, but they aren't particularly bothered by it and had some escaping already, as I also need to be careful to to crush the escapees with the lid, but I just caught them again. there are over 30 now btw and I'm thinking of throwing the most desperate ones to escape out, as it's not that cold outside yet and I've probably fixed up all the places they were getting in through.

That's probably a good idea and a good way to check if your house is rat-proof. If you keep catching the same rats then you're still missing some places.

what you do is build a cage with string, peanut butter and a spray. once the rodent chews the peanut butter, the force will not only seal the cage shut, but spray the rodent with enough chloroform to sedate him.
then, you take the rodent out of the cage and tape him to a table. this is the best part, you place a pair of earphones in the rat's ears and blast earraped high-pitched frequencies.

sure. I put the setup together basically overnight and I have no idea what I'm doing, so there's probably plenty wrong with it.
I temporarly had to pour the water in a plastic bowl and I'm waiting for them to get less active to replenish the bottle.
I already had to cut one of the mice out of the bar wires, hece the piece of plywood on top to cover the opening. she got doble stuck, with the legs and head facing upward through each opening. I first tried give her something to push against, then tried to pull her the same way she got there holding the base of her tails, but she kept holding the bars and I didn't want to dislocate her bones pulling too hard. I finally cut the wire in the opening her legs were sticking out from and bend the wire out, then help her push them down and she got on top of the cage and ran away. I hope she's alright and she only sprained some muscles or scratched herself against the cut wire (there was no blood) and it's nothing serious, because at first she was limping holding her hind legs stiff above ground, but then she quickly ran away on all fours, though visibly slower than normal.

You should consider letting them all go, they are likely to be carrying parasites
However I think you won't so, look into permethrin spray or similar to try kill off the things that can jump. I'm doubting you can get close enough for drops

I intended it as a temporarly solution and I will carry the cage outside, open it in the garden and leave for 15 minutes or so, but I'm still double checking the house for potential openings. if there are any still in the cage not trying to get out by then, I'll probably keep them

And OP delivers! Thank you! I really like that setup. That has to be, without a doubt, the nicest house mouse holding unit I’ve ever seen. That you went this far to house your house mice? You’re a good person. The little guys don’t know how lucky they are. Also I do like your earlier idea of letting the most ‘escape prone’ animals outside. That might be a good release valve.

I just use a mouse finder, in all honesty. There is expensive technology which detects the infrared light emitted by human head (known by some as heat vision), and this same technology can be bought for cheap from Chinese manufacturers to detect rotting flesh (please don't question why). It can be found for markup on eBay, or you should still be able to find some normal priced older versions on sites like NewEgg or AliBaba. I also have 2 friends who had to leave their apartments due to smells, it sucks but my country's economy is really that bad (I live in the United States of America, they pay $1100/mo).

ether way, leaving the appartment is advisable, if you pay that high amount of rent.

I'd get it by now and most of the mice were born in the house, the rest probably in the surrounding garden and grassfield, I don't live in a city where rodents can easily spread diseases. besides, I haven't had as much as a cold in over a decade.

A very short-tailed sable-furred sub-species of mouse got into my apartment one fall before last, and made amazingly short work of commuting between the floor, the counter, cutlery drawers, the bottom two shelves of my pantry, and even the attic, where I could hear it knawing now and then. I put out poison baits, and and one day grabbed it while it was almost dead on the floor of a spare bedroom, using a cripple grabber. I swung the bastard into a nearby toilet, and flushed it away forever.

there are several really small ones left, I dunno if they managed to slip through in between the bars and the mesh or got in from outside (there was no mice running free for 2 or 3 days), I only caught 3 recently, but judging on almost no new droppings anymore, there's maybe 2-4 of them left, tops. I'm not sure if putting new mice in a cage is a good idea anymore, though, because the last one I put in reacted hysterically when similarly sized mice were smelling him up and wanted to groom him and a bigger mouse keeps chasing him around the cage ocassionally, with no feuds before that.

I've had to live with mice for years because of retard parents who never set enough traps, at some point you just get sick of the shit + piss everywhere (they leave a piss trail when they walk) and you just start killing them with prejudice.
Keeping them as pets might seem nice but have fun cleaning that every week or more often, they smell even worse than domesticated mice.

I'm waiting to get a bit warmer, so they can at least have a chance to prepare, dig some tunnels etc. (according to the forcast should be next week), because it's currently close to 0 celsius during the nights where I live, and I also need to get someone to help me get the cage outside without disturbing it too much. If there are any wishing to stay the cage instead of running away outside, I'll keep them. I wish I could keep them all in the cage inside throughout the winter, but some still try to get out after enough time to see that they're gonna have regular food and water inside and they'll probably reproduce into an unmanagable size, e.g. two mice were already pregnant when I was putting them in the cage.

NTA but generally no, in the countryside every year there's a mass-migration of mice into people's homes as it gets cold, and if you live in an old house that means you get rid of the mice with traps every year. Usually only a few get in and you catch them. If they're handled early with enough traps they're not really a problem.
>>4893564
When it gets warmer you could leave the cage outside with holes in it just big enough for the young mice to escape but the old ones have to stay inside and make babies. It would be like a minecraft mouse spawner.

I use normal Victor wood traps. The trick is to bait them properly, and to do that you have to think like a mouse.
A mouse is safe, warm, and comfortable within the walls of your home and in the small recesses where it can build a nest undisturbed and raise its young without fear of predation or humans. Mice know they are weak and have only their size and speed to rely upon.
With that in mind, foraging poses the greatest risk to mice because they are exposed. They can be hunted down by predators and eaten, or killed on sight by humans. They are also aware of traps and pitfalls to some degree, barring more elaborate solutions like vacuum style traps and bucket traps. A mouse has to make the reward worth the risk, and to do that it must be able to take some of the foraged food home with it to feed its young. Consider foods that a mouse can stuff into its cheek pouches and transport easily back to its nest.
My typical bating solution is crunchy peanut butter rolled with granola. It's also a heavy bait and will weigh down the trigger more so it's much lighter when a mouse does try and stuff its cheeks.

So I had a baited wooden snap trap next to a microwave and one night the trap went off, all 4 traps had been nibbled but there was no mouse to be found
A few days later I find the mouse dead underneath the microwave so like 10 cm away from the trap
How do you think the mouse died?
I think I fucked up setting the traps and now I feel terrible
Btw this guy was a fucking machine, he shitted everywhere

not very well and most of them always scatter away at first when I get close to the cage, so I try not to disturb them too often outside of changing stuff in the cage and usually keep my distance when I watch them, unless I specifically want to make some videos, but a pair that often catapult each other with the wheel does stand out, there's also a big female mouse that bullies everyone, chasing them over the cage sometimes. I recognize a small one that always hangs around the water spout too

This should collapse their birthrates pretty fast.

sticky traps are very effective, and if you really don't want to kill them they CAN be removed from them. But it's best to just sticky trap and then shoot with a .22 or use a mouse bucket. Check out the youtube channel "Shawn Woods" he has reviewed probably hundreds of mouse traps on their effecrtiveness including both lethal and non-lethal traps

For the past 10,000 years, due to the absence of accessible and safe spay and neuter procedures, cats have had to forage for most of their own food. As a result, they have evolved to co-exist with a stable rodent population rather than killing everything and starving themselves. The only animals they're capable of eradicating are slow breeding species like songbirds and rare voles and dormice, and the only way they can even manage THAT is if there are hundreds to thousands of roaming cats per square mile. You trolling anti-cat redditors love spouting this bullshit lie that cats are killing machines because it plays into your fantasy where pet cats end up banned, but they aren't. It's simply not true. They don't even cause extinctions just by being cats, they cause extinctions because humans artificially overpopulate them so they resort to hunting things they normally wouldn't hunt often enough to exterminate, and simultaneously disrupt habitats by replacing them with parking lots to make the animal species that survive that process significantly more vulnerable.
Housecat caused extinctions were unheard of until the colonial and industrial age. The myth that they control any pests is now just that, a myth, along with the myth that sickness was caused by "unbalanced humours".

they were doing really well until today when I found one pretty small mouse dead and a similar one dying a few inches from her when I woke up. I have no idea what happened, but 2 mice dead at the same time without a single one dying for weeks cannot be a coincidence and they seemed too small to die naturally. the dying one was right next to the water bottle, but didn't even want to drink, even when I tried giving them completely fresh water, just moved an inch or two a few times and died maybe an hour later. I didn't see any wounds on them, so it didn't seem like other mice killed them.

Living with my crazy UDA dad. The home was was a frequent tourist attraction for them.
The thing is, my dad with his king complex, had every room except for the bedrooms, with rabbits, which probably attracted the mice. It also had an issue with flies.
Also, good luck if you know what the UDA is.
My Granddad on the mother side of the family ate the mice.

they haven't for almost 2 months, probably feel too exposed and comfortable enough in captivity to reproduce (still feels like a less shitty thing to do than to throw mice that haven't even ever been outside to freeze to death). I read somewhere that they eat at least a part of every litter, before they open their eyes, depending on the conditions, so it was probably the case, as sad as it is. even if they breed a new generation during those 4 or so months until spring, it's still manageable and I can always just throw in rat poison to kill them instantly in one place once it isn't anymore.

all they do is fuck and eat just like us humans.. but they get multiple per litter. then they breed and etc. i had mice as pets.. boring af. i now have a dog that is similar, but at least he is amusing to chase around. but unless you can "fix" mice they will just multiply. there is no negotiating with them, you become the swarm that walks or the murderer. choose kill, you will eventually trust me. just skip the section where you try and appease them. how do you appease a mouth with legs that keeps multiplying. you KILL THEM. i was once in your shoes, and i came to that conclusion, believe me or not.

not sure, it's impossible to tell with all the mouse houses and sawdust they can dig under, doesn't seem that many, but I've only found 3 dead mice so far. I probably miscounted them or they were getting out unnoticed when I was putting new mice in, because there's no way I have over 50, more like 20 tops.

Rodents can breed faster than you can realistically kill them unless you utilize chemicals.
The most important thing to do is to make sure that they can't get to into your house (seal up all the holes, etc.) Next, make sure your crawlspace (if you have one) has a vapor barrier so it's more difficult for them to burrow under your foundation. Once you've done that, you can do the old 5 gallon drowning bucket to kill any that are still living in your house.

there are only quick skirmishes and they are becoming increasingly rare. there used to be small splatters of blood from time to time and I'm not sure if it was due to infighting or, metal wire, or splinters, etc., but there aren't any new ones anymore and I can't spot any wounds.
now they seem to have divided the cage into two or three territories, with no man's land at the bottom, and they only fight when a mouse crosses over to a foreign one and an intruder quickly runs away.
I put a new mouse recently, a pretty huge but visibly starved one and she immediately tried to attack other mice, so several ganged up on her for a second and managed to chase her away. she then holed up peacefully in a corner and didn't ever try to escape, unlike other new additions.

Snap-traps are unreliable, sometimes they flip and catch nothing. I use the glue traps.
>"omg that's so inhumane!"
Only if you leave the poor bastards stuck there for days, which apparently most people do?? Removing violence from daily life has been a disaster for humanity. Here's what I do, I check the traps every morning and if a mouse is in one I give him a little test. Put a gloved finger in front of his face, try to pet his head, if he bites, I snip his head off with good scissors real fast, it's as merciful as I could realistically be. If he tolerates the petting and doesn't bite, I pull him off the trap, wash him with Goo-gone and shampoo and he becomes a pet. So far my ratio is 1:4 for pets vs snip. Pet mouse wears a little string leash and sleeps in a rolled up sock, they really don't eat much at all and are quite friendly.
Oh also watch out OP, some mice have fleas. The glue traps are nice because the fleas jump off the mouse and just get caught in the glue, too.

Best way to keep mice away is having a cat. They will bot get near your house and you don't have to kill them. My cat died 5 years ago and have now started noticing mice eating through milk packages and various aluminium foil I very temporarily store in the garage for disposal. They start chugging at it when it goes below sub zero, in search of food. I saw a little mice family dart across the yard last summer, which I never saw when I had cats.

The ones that escaped the first few times you opened the cage to replenish water must have warned all the other mice outside. It’s a scouting party, they’re there in an attempt to rescue their trapped brethren.

Cats dont kill off rodents because they exclusively hunt subadults and the ill. Healthy breeding adults are too much work so cats naturally leave them alone. This is how literally every natural predator works.
People have been claiming this ratter bullshit for ages and fumigations and inspections always prove them wrong. The best a cat can manage is an intruder situation, not a serious infestation.

Mice in my experience come in a lot of sub-species, rather more than are known to science. Around where I live they're black in fur, have tails about a CM long, and are almost unbelievably agile climbers if they get indoors. One of them got into my place last year, and commuted from floor to attic to counter to pantry to drawer and back by routes I still can't imagine how. (I could hear the little prick gnawing now and then in the attic above my bedroom, which gave me a certain concern about wiring up there) I put out poison baits, and eventually sighted him half dead and sluggish in a spare bedroom, nabbed him with a one of those cripple grabbers, then conveyed him to the toilet.

Well no...
Canines are the group of mammal most immune to prion disease most likely because they actually do focus on eating sick animals.
Cats don't have this prion immunity most likely because...
They just eat anything they can catch.
Your cat isn't going to hunt a hundred rats/mice if you feed it every day. They aren't dogs.

I don't care about being altruistic, I just don't wanna rush to kill some animals until I absolutely have to, so they can chase each other or clumsily climb the hamster wheel, instead of being kill, even if for one more day. I can always kill them at any moment but can't unkill them. I plan to throw them out at the earliest spring, but if they become unmanagable before that, I can always throw in some rat poison, with an added benefit of not having to deal with decomposing mice in every nook and cranny

t’s important to note that certain dog breeds are more predisposed to biting than others. In fact, the CDC reports that pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and mixed-breed dogs account for the majority of dog bite-related fatalities. These breeds are responsible for more than 80% of fatal dog attacks, despite accounting for only a small percentage of the overall dog population.

The correct method is a trap. Cats existed because africans couldnt engineer rat traps. The aliens only taught them how to build pyramids.
Or more likely, not because they did shit against infestations (the idea of only getting a few mice in your home is modern) but because they were seen with dead rodents sometimes and deeply superstitious bronze agers thought their spiritual energy would protect the grain.

>There is absolutely no point is empathizing with animals
false
>people with no empathy or brains
true
unlike people, animals are innocent, acting on instinct and their will to survive, they don't do anything out of malice

I'm gonna piggyback off anon's thread, I saw one rat in my shitbox apartment. It ran out of my bathroom, there's a shitload of holes in my walls, and I haven't seen or heard it since. I threw out all my garbage and set up lights in my bathroom and started smoking more weed inside. Do you think they left or should I let my downstairs neighbors know?

not a chance, they don't give a fuck about smoking, lights, etc. and loud noises only cause them to hide for a bit. it's just more careful now. the mice I had running around were completely careless and impudent but I have one left that managed to get in during winter when I left the door open picking up a package and I wouldn't even know it's there if it weren't for some new droppings and disappearing food

This is a good read for anyone still abusing their cat in the name of egyptian hearsay. They were not domesticated to work, they self domesticated because people like petting them and giving them food. Please stop giving your cats tapeworms.

If you're going to condemn cats for playing with the mice they're going to eventually kill and eat, first condemn the zoosadists who justify killing mice in all sorts of ways with no intention of eating them

Yeah dogs aren't "workers" either and animals aren't meant for slavery, "domestication" literally just means slavery and forced breeding. They're actually violent wild animals only kind to the ones who feed them, just like any other one
